Day 1: Flight to Semera and Drive to Ahmedela
- Take an early morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera, the capital of Ethiopia’s Afar Regional State.
Meet the expedition team and 4x4 vehicles upon arrival.
Begin the drive across stark desert landscapes towards Ahmedela, a remote outpost bordering the Danakil Depression.
Set up camp upon arrival at Ahmedela.
Visit nearby Lake Asale, a vast salt plain glowing under the late afternoon sun.
Witness traditional camel caravans crossing the salt flats at sunset, offering a glimpse into Afar life and the region’s enduring traditions.
Return to camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Dallol Excursion and Transfer to Erta Ale Volcano
- Begin the day with sunrise over the salt plains of Lake Asale.
Proceed to Dallol to explore its surreal, colorful landscape shaped by sulfur-rich hot springs and dramatic mineral formations.
Marvel at the vivid palette of yellow, orange, and green caused by potash, salt, and volcanic activity.
In the afternoon, drive toward the active volcano, Erta Ale.
Rest briefly at the base before beginning a 40-minute hike to the volcano’s crater.
At nightfall, observe the mesmerizing glow of molten lava moving in patterns within the crater.
Descend to base camp for an extraordinary overnight experience under the open desert sky.

Day 3: Sunrise at Erta Ale, Lake Afdera Hot Springs, Return to Addis Ababa
- Wake early to witness sunrise over Erta Ale’s active crater, a spectacular natural phenomenon.
Return to base camp for breakfast.
Begin the journey back to Semera with a stop at Lake Afdera, known for its salt production and hot springs.
Enjoy time at the lake’s hot springs before continuing to Semera airport.
Board the late afternoon flight back to Addis Ababa, concluding the journey through one of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth.
