Embark on an unforgettable 5-day journey to the Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and most extreme places on Earth, located in northern Ethiopia. Explore surreal landscapes featuring colorful sulfur springs, vast salt flats, and active volcanoes like Erta Ale. Witness the traditional salt mining practices of the Afar nomads and marvel at the unique geological formations of Dallol, the lowest point in Africa.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive Addis Ababa and City Tour
- Arrive at Bole International Airport.
- Welcome and transfer to hotel.
- Visit National Archaeological Museum to see "Lucy" skeleton.
- Explore Ethnological Museum at Addis Ababa University.
- Visit Holy Trinity Cathedral.
- Drive to Mount Entoto for panoramic city views.
Overnight at hotel.
Day 2: Addis Ababa to Semera
- Depart Addis Ababa and travel to Semera, Afar region capital.
- Arrange permits and prepare for desert expedition.
Overnight at hotel in Semera.
Day 3: Semera to Danakil Depression
- Drive in 4x4 vehicle to Danakil Depression, "Lost Point of the Earth".
- Stop at Lake Afdera, a hypersaline lake with unique geology.
- Continue to Amidala to meet police scouts and obtain permits.
- Observe camel caravans transporting salt to Semera.
- Walk in Ale Asele area and enjoy sunset.
Camp overnight at Hamed Ela.
Day 4: Explore Dallol and Erta Ale Volcano
- Visit Dallol, Africa’s lowest point at 116 meters below sea level.
- Observe colorful mineral formations and hot springs.
- Visit Lake Asale for salt harvesting by Afar nomads.
- Drive to Dodom and trek 15 km to Erta Ale volcano.
- Watch volcanic eruption at night.
- Return to base camp and camp overnight.
Day 5: Erta Ale to Semera and Return to Addis Ababa
- Descend from Erta Ale early morning.
- Stop at Lake Afdera hot springs for swimming and relaxation.
- Drive to Semera to catch flight to Addis Ababa.
- Transfer to hotel and overnight stay.

1. Extreme Heat

Travel is safest between November and February (cooler months).

Always carry plenty of water, a hat, sunscreen, and light cotton clothing.

Avoid midday hikes; most tours travel early morning or late afternoon.

2. Health & Safety

Heatstroke and dehydration are the main risks — drink water constantly.

Carry oral rehydration salts or electrolytes.

Avoid touching sulfur springs — they are highly acidic and can cause burns.

A basic first aid kit is essential.

Visitors with heart conditions or respiratory issues should consult a doctor before going.
