The itinerary

Day 01

Sumidero Canyon, San Juan Chamula and San Cristobal

  • Arrive at the airport in Tuxtla-Gutierrez and meet your local tour guide for pick-up and transfer.

  • Transfer to Sumidero Canyon.

  • Take a breathtaking boat trip along the Grijalva River, which forms this gigantic canyon with slopes rising up to 1,000 m.

  • Head to the indigenous town of San Juan Chamula to admire the modern life of ancient Mayan descendants.

  • Walk around the town and visit the main place of Tzotzil religious worship - the Church of John the Baptist. The local religion is a combination of the Catholic faith and ancient paganism.

  • Proceed to San Cristobal de las Casas, the cultural capital of Chiapas state, where numerous indigenous tribes live alongside Europeans. The city has a wonderful atmosphere, with plenty of cafes and jazz clubs playing live music. Moreover, San Cristobal is the place to try some of the best Mexican coffee.

2
Day 02

Toniná, Misol-Ha Waterfall and Palenque

  • Take a scenic mountain drive to the archaeological site of Toniná - seldom visited by tourists, yet a very impressive Mayan city with a colossal 70-meter-high pyramid that can be climbed to the top.

  • Transfer to the beautiful 35-meter-high Misol-Ha Waterfall with your Mexican tour guide.

  • Go for a relaxing swim and step inside the cavern behind the waterfall.

  • Proceed to the town of Palenque.

Day 03

Palenque Ruins and Colonial Campeche

  • Visit one of the most beautiful Mayan cities - Palenque. Besides the archaeological site, admire the reconstruction of the tomb of the most famous Palenque ruler, Pakal the Great.

  • A short jungle walk will provide an opportunity to encounter wild species native to the region.

  • Transfer to the beautiful colonial city of Campeche, which played a key role in the development of the Spanish colony.

  • Traverse the historical center, located inside the 17th-century fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The history of the city itself is closely connected to the pirates of the Caribbean.

Day 04

Celestún Reserve, Uxmal and Chichen-Itza

  • Move to Celestún Natural Biosphere Reserve, home to one of the largest colonies of flamingos in the Western Hemisphere.

  • Take a boat trip through the natural lagoon and mangroves in search of flamingos.

  • Visit the ancient Mayan city of Uxmal, which represents a fine example of decorative Mayan art. The bas-reliefs and ornaments on the facades of the buildings are unique to this region in the northwest of the Yucatan Peninsula.

  • Transfer to Chichen-Itza. It is better to stay overnight next to the archaeological sites so that you can be among the first to enter in the morning before crowds of tourists arrive from Cancun.

  • Visit souvenir stalls.

Day 05

Chichen Itza and Underground River to Cancun

  • Marvel at the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, the ruins of an ancient city considered sacred by two Meso-American civilizations. This is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a pilgrimage destination for spiritualists from all over the world. Although it has been investigated for almost 200 years, this archaeological site continues to surprise archaeologists.

  • Get an opportunity to explore one of the biggest underground rivers of Yucatan, naturally decorated with limestone formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. This underground river is located not far from Playa del Carmen.

  • Transfer to your hotel in Cancun or Riviera Maya.
