Discovering Matmata: Where Star Wars Came to Life

You'll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with these cave houses that are a fascinating example of architecture and ancestral lifestyle. Some houses are still inhabited, and local residents can welcome you to explain their lifestyle and the construction of these unique homes. You will see wells inside the houses, chambers dug into the earth and inner courtyards. Matmata is also known for being the setting for several scenes in the first Star Wars movie 1977. The cave house where Luke Skywalker lives with his uncle Owen and aunt Beru was filmed in this village. Although the setting is a little different today, many fans of the saga come here to immerse themselves in the world of George Lucas. You can visit the interior of the house which has been transformed into a Star Wars museum, with souvenirs and objects from the film.

Ksar Hadada: Where Star Wars Meets Berber Heritage

Ksar Hadada is an ancient fortified Berber village, built of raw earth, located in the Tataouine region, in southern Tunisia. This ksar is one of the many typical historical sites of southern Tunisia, known for their unique architecture and their function of storing grain in large silo-shaped structures. The ksar consists of tower-shaped buildings called ghorfas, which are chambers or cells built within the walls of the main building. The Ksar Hadada was used as the setting for some scenes of Star Wars Episode. The Phantom Threat, especially those set on Tatooine, the desert planet where Anakin Skywalker lives as a young boy. Specifically, the ksar was used to film the exterior of Anakin's mother Shmi Skywalker's house when Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive in the village looking for parts to repair their ship.

Walking Through Chenini: A Berber Heritage Experience

The village of Chenini is located on a hill, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes. You can take beautiful pictures of the cacti, palm groves, and mountains that surround this ancient village. Desert landscapes create a magical atmosphere, with changing daylight that transforms the colors of the soil and buildings. The local guide will explain how these villages have been built and used over the centuries. The village is a perfect example of Berber architecture and how the inhabitants have adapted to desert conditions. You will also learn the importance of the ksar fortified village as a refuge and storage center.

Another feature of Chenini, like other villages in the area, is its ksar. It is an ancient citadel that served both as a refuge and a storage place for food for the inhabitants.

Ksar Ouled Soltane: Where History Meets Star Wars

Ksar Ouled Soltane, located about 20 kilometers north of Tataouine, is one of the most famous sites in the southern Tunisian region, due to its fascinating history and its role in filming scenes from the famous Star Wars saga. This ksar, with its unique architecture and mysterious atmosphere, attracts not only history and culture lovers, but also the many fans of the film franchise. In The Phantom Menace, the Ksar Ouled Soltane was used to film the exterior of Anakin's mother Shmi Skywalker's house. The scene in which Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi arrive in Tatooine looking for parts for their spaceship was shot in front of the entrance of one of the ksar's buildings. Indeed, the earth and stone towers of the Ksar Ouled Soltane bear a striking resemblance to the habitat of Shmi Skywalker, as shown in the film.
