Know before you go

  • Yellow Fever Vaccination: It is highly recommended that travelers to Colombia, including Bogotá and surrounding areas such as Lake Guatavita, get vaccinated against yellow fever at least 10 days before their trip. While the risk in Bogotá itself is considered low, vaccination is generally advised for travel within Colombia, especially to regions outside major urban centers. Some travelers may be asked to show proof of vaccination upon arrival. Please consult your doctor or a travel health clinic for the most up-to-date recommendations based on your individual health and travel itinerary within Colombia.
  • Currency: The local currency is the Colombian Peso (COP). While credit cards are accepted in many establishments, it is advisable to have some cash on hand, especially for smaller vendors and markets. You can exchange currency at the airport or authorized exchange offices in the city. ATMs are also widely available.
  • Language: The official language is Spanish. While some people in tourist areas may speak English, knowing a few basic Spanish phrases can enhance your experience and interactions with locals.
  • Safety and Security: Like any major city, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions against petty theft. Keep valuables secure, avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics unnecessarily, and be cautious in crowded areas. Stick to well-lit and populated streets, especially at night.
  • Health: Consult your doctor about recommended vaccinations, beyond yellow fever, and other health precautions for Colombia. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance that covers medical expenses.
  • Flexibility: While the itinerary aims to cover the key highlights, unforeseen circumstances such as weather or local events might necessitate minor adjustments. Your guide will do their best to minimize any disruption.
  • Dietary Requirements: Please inform the tour operator of any specific dietary requirements or allergies at the time of booking so necessary arrangements can be made where possible.
  • Travel Insurance: It is strongly recommended to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, lost luggage, and other unforeseen events.
  • Visa Requirements: Check the visa requirements for your nationality before traveling to Colombia. Many nationalities can enter Colombia for tourism for a certain period without a visa, but it is your responsibility to confirm the regulations applicable to your passport.
  • Gratuities: Tipping for guides and drivers is customary in Colombia and is a way to show appreciation for good service. While the amount is at your discretion, it is good to factor this into your budget.
