Drive to Shiga Kogen (Approx. 1.5 hours)

Enjoy a relaxing drive through the mountainous terrain as you head to Japan's largest ski resort, Shiga Kogen, which transforms into a stunning alpine destination year-round.

Explore Shiga Kogen (30-45 minutes)

Take a short walk along the trails, enjoy panoramic mountain views, and breathe in the fresh alpine air as you explore the vast beauty of Shiga Kogen.

Drive to Kusatsu-Shirane Volcano (30 minutes)

Take a scenic drive along the mountain roads leading to the Kusatsu-Shirane volcanic area, known for its unique volcanic landscapes.

Discover Yugama Crater (if accessible) (30-45 minutes)

If accessible, take a short hike around the emerald-green Yugama Crater Lake, one of the world's most acidic lakes. Experience the awe-inspiring volcanic scenery. Please note that access may be subject to restrictions.

Lunch Break (45 minutes - 1 hour)

Relax at Kusatsu Onsen (1-1.5 hours)

What to bring

  • Proper hiking shoes or boots - The trail to Yugama Crater Lake includes uneven, rocky, and sometimes steep paths. Comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are highly recommended.
  • Layered clothing - Mountain weather changes quickly, so bring warm layers and a windproof jacket.
  • Swimwear & small towel - If you plan to enjoy the onsens. Some onsen facilities offer rental towels.
  • Camera - Capture the stunning volcanic landscapes, mountain views, and hot spring town.
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses - The high-altitude sun can be strong, especially on clear days.
  • Water & light snacks - Stay hydrated and energized during the hike.

Know before you go

  • Seasonal Availability - This tour is only available from mid-April to early November, as the road to Mount Shirane is closed in winter due to heavy snowfall.
  • Volcanic Activity & Access Restrictions - Mount Shirane last erupted in 2018. While the volcanic alert level was lowered in 2021, access to Yugama Crater Lake may still be restricted. We will adjust the itinerary based on the latest safety updates.
  • Hiking Difficulty - The hike to Yugama Crater is moderate to challenging, with rocky and uneven trails. Proper hiking shoes are required. Those uncomfortable with hiking can enjoy scenic views from other vantage points.
  • Onsen Etiquette - If you choose to visit an onsen, please note that swimwear is not allowed in traditional hot springs. Most facilities provide rental towels if needed.
  • Additional Costs - Onsen entry fees, meals, and personal expenses are not included in the tour price.
  • Flexible Itinerary - While the schedule is planned for an 8-9 hour tour, we can adjust stops and timing to suit your preferences.
