Göbeklitepe, Şanlıurfa Museums and Balıklı Göl
Stop at: Göbeklitepe, Örencik 63290, Şanlıurfa 63050 Türkiye
- Göbeklitepe, which means "belly hill," is the oldest known temple in human history and the first religious center on Earth. Approximately 20 temples have been discovered in the region, and so far, six temples have been unearthed.
- The soil level at the site shows that the structure was buried by human hands rather than by natural causes. Göbeklitepe was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018.
- You can see at least 15 buildings and more than 200 obelisks. The T-shaped columns, measuring between 3 and 6 meters in length, are thought to represent stylized human figures. You will also see a 3-dimensional lion relief.
- These figures strengthen the possibility that lions lived in Anatolia during the Neolithic period.
- The discovery of Göbeklitepe indicates that settled life may have developed through the temple, not agriculture. Before Göbeklitepe, history books stated that the transition to settled life occurred with the emergence of farming and animal husbandry.
