The itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Kigali and Scenic Transfer to Bwindi

Day One:

  • You'll be welcomed by an English-speaking professional safari driver-guide at Kigali International Airport or your lodge in Kigali.
  • You'll receive a detailed briefing about the entire safari.
  • You'll then depart in a 4x4 safari vehicle and explore the Kigali Genocide Memorial, learning about the history and culture of Rwanda.
  • You'll then proceed on the breathtaking journey to Uganda.

Arrival and check-in.

  • The journey from Kigali will take approximately 3-4 hours.
  • You'll have lunch en route at a restaurant in Kigali or Kabale town.
  • The drive is very scenic, with rolling hills in both Rwanda and southwestern Uganda. You'll encounter spectacular views and can stop for a photo opportunity or simply enjoy the clear scenery if interested.
  • After entering Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, check in to your lodge and receive a detailed briefing and the programme for the following day.
  • The guide will give you highlights and advice about how to dress and behave while on the trek.
  • Enjoy your delicious dinner and overnight stay at the safari lodge.

Day 02

Gorilla Tracking and Batwa Cultural Walk

  • Enjoy an early morning breakfast and take in stunning views of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and its iconic surroundings.
  • Afterwards, you'll take a short 5-minute drive to the park headquarters for the general briefing by the ranger guides.
  • Upon arrival at the park, you'll enjoy entertainment by local women performing traditional dances. You can join in if you feel like getting some exercise before the trek.
  • The ranger guide will give you a detailed briefing with the other trackers. You'll then be placed into groups of about 8 members each to track different gorilla groups.
  • As you move into the dense jungle led by professional armed ranger guides, keep your eyes open, as you may spot other animals and birds in the park.
  • After reaching the gorillas, you'll be able to take iconic close-up pictures. The humour of these gentle giants will leave you breathless. The ranger guides will give you all the facts you need to know, and you'll be able to ask questions about anything you don't understand.
  • The one hour you'll spend in a face-to-face encounter with the gorillas in their natural habitat will be the most unforgettable part of your entire life.
  • After the trek, congratulate each other on your success and receive your tracking certificates to take with you, confirming that you successfully experienced this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Lunch, Batwa Cultural Walk

  • After the trek and your delicious lunch, before returning to Kigali, you can take a short 1-hour visit to the Batwa community.
  • The Batwa are a tribe of bushmen living on the boundaries of the park who used to live in this forest with the gorillas.
  • You'll be able to learn about their life history in the forest, culture, storytelling, and entertainment.
  • You'll then embark on your journey back to Kigali.
  • End of the trip.

Know before you go

The gorilla tracking permit included in the cost is booked early in advance through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and costs $800, so early bookings are recommended.

  • Uganda is a visitable country all year round, so this tour is possible in any season. However, the dry season offers the best experience (June to mid-September and December to late February).
