Come and discover Lisbon with me, so many times nicknamed by poets as the "white city" or the "city of light". Stop by the Belém Tower, an ornate and distinctively shaped fortress dating from 1515, then walk to the Monument to the Discoveries, which celebrates Portugal's golden age. Also honoured with UNESCO World Heritage status is the magnificent - and my favourite - Monastery of Saint Jerome. No trip to Belém would be complete without sampling the delectable Pastéis de Belém - warm custard tarts with a light, crunchy casing, served here since 1837.

Enjoy a coffee break at Pastelaria de Belém to taste the famous Portuguese custard tarts.

Day 01

Belém District Walking Tour

• We start at Belém Tower, then walk for about 15 minutes along the waterfront to the Monument to the Discoveries, passing by the Cultural Center of Belém.
• We then arrive at Jerónimos Monastery to visit its cloister and church.
• Enjoy a coffee break at Pastelaria de Belém to taste the famous Portuguese custard tarts. Time permitting, we will also visit the Coach and Carriages Museum.
• The Monastery of Saint Jerome closes on Sunday mornings and Mondays. The tour can be customised according to your preferences.

Know before you go

• The meeting point is different depending on whether the tour is in the morning or afternoon.
• Lisbon is a very hilly city, and all sidewalks are paved with cobblestones. We are not walking much, though.
• ATMs are the best way to get euros. They are safe and available on every corner.
• Tap water is safe everywhere.
• From June to August, temperatures can be very high (90/95F - 38/40C).
• Only euros are accepted in Portugal. No other currency is accepted in stores, markets, or cafés.
