Know before you go

Know Before You Go - Nevado Vallunaraju 2-Day Climb

  • Altitude and acclimatization: Vallunaraju summit elevation is 5,686 meters (18,655 feet), and Moraine Camp sits at 4,900 meters (16,076 feet). Due to the high altitude, it is vital to acclimatize properly before attempting the climb. Spend at least 2 days in Huaraz to help your body prepare. Symptoms of altitude sickness can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. If you experience these, inform your guide immediately.
  • Fitness level: The climb requires a good level of physical fitness, especially for high-altitude hiking and glacier climbing. While Vallunaraju does not require advanced technical expertise, basic mountaineering skills such as walking with crampons, using an ice axe, and roping up are essential. If you are not familiar with these skills, it is recommended to take a short training session in Huaraz or with your guide before the climb.
  • Weather conditions: Mountain weather at high altitude can change quickly and be unpredictable. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially at night. Be prepared for cold weather during the summit attempt, when early morning temperatures can reach -10°C or lower, and expect snow or ice conditions. Bring clothing suited for cold, windy, and snowy conditions, including layers and waterproof gear.
  • Climbing difficulty: The ascent typically starts around 2-3 a.m. from Moraine Camp, with the goal of reaching the summit by around 8 a.m. The climb involves a combination of steep trekking and glacier hiking. There are sections of loose rock and ice, and some parts may be challenging for those not accustomed to mountaineering. The summit offers incredible views of surrounding peaks, including Huascarán, Chopicalqui, and Huandoy.
  • Equipment: You will need ice axes, crampons, helmets, and ropes for the climb. These are often provided by your guide or can be rented in Huaraz. Mountaineering boots compatible with crampons are required. Pack personal essentials such as a headlamp, warm clothing, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, snacks, and a camera. If you do not have your own climbing gear, local shops in Huaraz rent ice axes, crampons, and other necessary equipment.
  • Guide and safety: A certified and experienced guide is required for the climb, especially for safety on the glacier and summit. Guides assist with route finding, glacier travel, and rope work. Smaller groups of around 2-6 people are common, allowing for more personalized attention and a safer experience on the mountain. Always follow your guide's instructions and carry personal identification, insurance details, and emergency contact information in case of accidents or health issues.
  • Permits and fees: A mountain permit is required for climbing Vallunaraju. This can be obtained through a registered tour operator or directly from the Peruvian Mountain Climbing Authority. The cost of the climb generally includes permits, guide services, equipment rental, and transportation, but always confirm these details with your tour operator.
  • Physical preparation: If possible, hike or trek at altitudes above 3,000 meters before the climb to help your body adjust to lower oxygen levels. Regular cardio exercises such as hiking, running, or cycling will help improve endurance. Focus on building strength in your legs and core to handle the demands of a high-altitude climb.
  • Respect the environment: Follow Leave No Trace principles. Always clean up after yourself and ensure that all waste is taken back down the mountain, including food wrappers and toilet paper. The Cordillera Blanca is a beautiful and protected area, so be mindful of the environment and avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • Health and medical considerations: Travel insurance with coverage for mountaineering and high-altitude climbing is essential, including evacuation coverage in case of emergency. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, such as heart problems or respiratory issues, consult your doctor before attempting the climb. Bring any personal medications you may need, including altitude sickness tablets such as Diamox, painkillers, and any other prescribed medication.
  • Trip summary: Day 1 includes transfer from Huaraz to the Llaca Valley and a hike to Moraine Camp at 4,900 meters. Day 2 includes an early morning summit of Nevado Vallunaraju at 5,686 meters, a return to Moraine Camp, and transport back to Huaraz.

By preparing well and understanding the challenges and requirements, your climb of Nevado Vallunaraju can be an incredible experience filled with stunning views and unforgettable memories. Stay safe, acclimatize properly, and enjoy the beauty of the Cordillera Blanca.
