8-Day Tanzania Wildlife Safari through Serengeti's Western Corridor

8 Days Round trip from Arusha Easy pace

The journey

Trip highlights
  • 01 Observe the wildebeest migration in the Serengeti's Western Corridor
  • 02 Marvel at giant crocodiles near the Grumeti River
  • 03 Look for the Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater
  • 04 Explore Tarangire National Park, known for its large elephant herds
  • 05 See flamingos and diverse birdlife at Lake Manyara National Park

Embark on this 8-day expedition to a part of the Serengeti known as the Western Corridor. The main features of this area are the two rivers, the Grumeti and the Mbalageti, which sustain an excellent permanent wildlife population, including predators, zebras, and wildebeest, along with a wide variety of birdlife. The migration passes through roughly between May and July, pausing to gather momentum before crossing the crocodile-rich waters of the Grumeti River. Along the way, the safari also takes you through Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara for a rich wildlife experience across Tanzania's iconic parks.

But the beauty of the landscape, stretching without end beneath an infinite sky on a Serengeti West safari, changes something within the watcher, who becomes more aware of the place of humankind within the drama of the animal world.

  • Serengeti National Park is the largest in Tanzania, covering an astounding 15,000 square kilometres, with diverse landscapes and habitats such as grassy plains, swamps, lakes, savannah, and mountains. Here, the great migration of wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes takes place.

Day 04

Western Corridor and Grumeti Migration Zone

  • After breakfast, you will head straight toward the Western Corridor, a drive of approximately 1.5 hours.
  • Around the end of April, May, and June, a vast army of wildebeests and their companions - zebras, elands, and gazelles - mill around the Western Corridor of the Serengeti, south of the Grumeti River.
  • You can encounter leopards and hyenas, and ahead lie giant Nile crocodiles. Many hundreds perish as some hazard the river crossing while others detour it.
  • But the beauty of the landscape, stretching without end beneath an infinite sky on a Serengeti West safari, changes something within the watcher, who becomes more aware of the place of humankind within the drama of the animal world.
  • You will then head straight to your accommodation, where you will have dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 05

Exploring the Western Serengeti

  • After breakfast, you will continue exploring the Western Corridor of the Serengeti. The wildebeest migration can normally be found in the Western Corridor depending on rainfall patterns.
  • After the morning game drive, you will then head to your accommodation for a hot lunch. In the evening, you will continue with your game drive and experience the sunset in the western Serengeti.
  • After that, you will have dinner and an overnight stay in the Western Corridor area at your accommodation.
  • Alternatively, you can spend a full day exploring this area with your lunch boxes, surrounded by an abundance of wildlife, while following the great migration.

Day 06

Full-Day Game Drives in Central Serengeti

  • This entire day is set aside for game drives in the Serengeti.
  • The Serengeti, home to an abundance of wildlife such as impalas, buffalos, crocodiles, and hippos, is even more famous for its great migrating herds of zebras, antelopes, and wildebeest.
  • The animals' trek is determined by the rainfall and varies from year to year. In November and December, the animals move from the northern region, dominated by woodlands and hills, to the grassy plains of the south.
  • During the longer rainy season from April to June, they return to the north.
  • Apart from the migrating herds, you may also have the opportunity to see resident predators such as leopards, cheetahs, and lions fulfilling their role in the circle of life.
  • After an extensive game drive, you will head to your tented lodge for a hearty dinner and another night by the fire, relaxing and conversing under the sweeping majesty of the star-bright African night on the 'endless plain'.

Accommodation: Into Wild Africa Serengeti

Day 07

Ngorongoro Crater Wildlife Experience

  • After breakfast, you will head out for an en-route game drive through the Serengeti. You might be able to spot the Big Five - lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard - before continuing your journey to Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was formed millions of years ago, is 600 m deep, and covers roughly 260 square kilometres.
  • Due to its dense animal population of approximately 25,000, the crater offers some of the best wildlife viewing of all the parks in Tanzania. You will arrive at the crater rim before lunch.
  • You will descend into the crater, and very quickly you may see wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, elephants, and some of the more than 500 bird species found in the area.
  • With a little luck, you might also catch a glimpse of the endangered black rhino through the grass.
  • After lunch and a full afternoon inside the crater, you will head to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Tortilis Ngorongoro Camp

Day 08

Lake Manyara Safari and Return to Arusha

  • After breakfast, you will drive to your final destination on this epic safari - Lake Manyara National Park. This relatively small but diverse park, 120 km west of Arusha, is named after the shallow salt lake that covers about seventy percent of the park's surface area.
  • Flooding and drying with the seasons, the soda lake is home to thousands of flamingos as well as more than 500 other bird species.
  • During your exploration of the park, you will see monkeys, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalos, elephants, and, with some luck, lions lounging in the trees.
  • The park is known for its diverse landscapes, including open grassy plains, primate-filled woodlands, and baobab-dotted cliffs.
  • After another memorable game drive, and with your adventure coming to an end, you will return to Arusha in the late afternoon, filled with images of the African wilds to last a lifetime.
