Embark on this 6-day safari to follow the great migrating herds of wildebeests and zebras at Lake Ndutu in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, part of the Serengeti ecosystem, with the main season running from December to April. January is the best time to witness the calving, as the herds spread across the short-grass plains while predators wait nearby for hunting opportunities. Along the way, you will experience Tarangire, South Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara on an unforgettable wildlife journey.

During a short period around January, normally lasting about 3 weeks, the majority of the wildebeest calves are born here, with around half a million young dropped in this awesome act of synchronized birthing.

Day 02

Tarangire National Park Game Drive

  • In the morning, our safari guide will pick you up from your lodging in Arusha.
  • We will set out for Tarangire National Park on a good tarmac road across gently rolling Maasai plains dotted with scattered acacia trees.
  • As we travel, we'll pass many Maasai in their colourful dress, walking along the roadside, riding bicycles, herding cattle, and driving donkey carts. Tarangire National Park, well known for its large elephant herds, is also home to many other creatures.
  • From the open roof of our state-of-the-art safari jeep, we'll experience the seasonal swamps, savanna, and the life-giving Tarangire River.
  • Look out for a multitude of creatures, from zebra and wildebeest to buffalo, elephant, and giraffe, to name just a few. It is also possible to glimpse lions stalking prey or leopards relaxing in the trees above.
  • After our extensive game drive, we will take in the varied sights and sounds of the wilderness before driving to your accommodation for dinner and an overnight stay.

Accommodation: Africa Safari Karatu

Day 03

Journey to South Serengeti and Ndutu

  • After breakfast, we will head to the Lake Ndutu region, situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a sublime landscape within the southern Serengeti ecosystem.
  • The drive takes approximately 3 hours, leading us across the beautiful Rift Valley landscape to Lake Ndutu. Like most other Rift Valley lakes, it is alkaline and is frequently inhabited by a wide array of wildlife.
  • Once appetites are sated, undertake a game drive in the Ndutu region. The majority of the wildebeest migration can normally be found on the short-grass plains from December to April.
  • After the late afternoon game drive, you will drive to your accommodation for dinner and your overnight stay.

Accommodation: Ndutu Heritage Camp

Day 04

Full-Day Ndutu Migration Safari

  • After a hearty breakfast, we will head out to enjoy a full-day game drive in the Ndutu region.
  • We endeavour to explore the range of different habitats found here, including swamps, woodland, soda lakes, and the world-famous Serengeti short-grass plains. We will witness the awesome sight of the great thronging herds of wildebeests and zebras.
  • During a short period around January, normally lasting about 3 weeks, the majority of the wildebeest calves are born here, with around half a million young dropped in this awesome act of synchronized birthing.
  • The sea of grass provides little cover, and the young wildebeest calves can run within minutes of being born. Within 3 days, they are normally strong enough to keep up with the herd.
  • As our full day of adventure on the 'Endless Plain' comes to an end, we will depart for our accommodation for dinner and your overnight stay.

Accommodation: Ndutu Heritage Camp

Day 05

Serengeti En Route to Ngorongoro Crater

  • After breakfast, we'll head out for an en-route game drive through the Serengeti.
  • With lady luck on our side, we may spot all of the Big Five across the 'Endless Plain' on the way to the Ngorongoro Crater. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was formed millions of years ago by the massive explosion of a volcano once higher than Kilimanjaro. It is 610 m deep and covers roughly 304 sq km.
  • Due to its dense animal population of approximately 25,000 ungulates, the Crater offers some of the best game viewing.
  • We will arrive at the Crater rim before lunch.
  • With views of the spectacular landscape spread out before our eyes captured in our memories and memory cards, we descend the bumpy, winding track that brings us onto the Crater floor.
  • Very quickly, we may see wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, elephant, and perhaps, if we're lucky, the black rhino through the grass.
  • After lunch and a full afternoon inside the Crater, we'll head to our partner lodge in Karatu for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 06

Lake Manyara Safari and Return to Arusha

  • After breakfast, we'll drive to our final destination on this epic safari - Lake Manyara National Park. This is a relatively small but diverse park, 120 km west of Arusha.
  • It is named for the shallow salt lake that covers around seventy percent of the surface area, flooding and drying with the seasons.
  • It is home to thousands of flamingos and an extraordinary variety of around 500 other bird species.
  • As we explore the park, we will see monkeys, giraffes, zebra, wildebeests, buffalo, elephants, and, with some luck, lions lounging in the trees.
  • The park is known for its diverse landscapes: open grassy plains, primate-filled woodlands, and baobab-dotted cliffs.
  • After lunch, we'll head back to Arusha, arriving late in the afternoon with all the sights and sounds of wild East Africa tucked away in your mind for life's journey ahead.
