Start at Kainan Station and follow the Kiiji Route of the Kumano Kodo on a rewarding 15 km walk through history and nature. Visit Fujishiro Shrine, one of the five most prestigious shrines among the 99 Kumano shrines, and pass historic sites such as Fujishiro Pass, Kitsumoto Shrine, Tokorozaka Oji, Yamaji Oji Shrine, Ichitsubo Oji, and Tsumekaki Zizo. Along the way, experience serene bamboo groves and the rich cultural heritage of this ancient pilgrimage route before finishing at Kii-Miyahara Station.

The itinerary

Day 01

Kumano Kodo Walk from Kainan to Kii-Miyahara

9:00: Begin at Kainan Station.
9:30: Visit Fujishiro Shrine (Fujishiro Oji), a key location on the pilgrimage route where former emperors stayed and one of the five most prestigious shrines among the 99 Kumano shrines.
11:00: Continue to Fujishiro Pass, a nationally designated historic site where you can see various historical sites. This is the most difficult part of the Kii Road.
12:00: Visit Kitsumoto Shrine and Tokorozaka Oji, which enshrine Tajimamori, the deity of mandarin oranges and sweets, and Kumano Iza no Okami.
13:00: Stop at Yamaji Oji Shrine and Ichitsubo Oji. At the autumn festival on October 10, a crying sumo match is held here to pray for the healthy growth of children, and it has been designated an intangible cultural asset by Wakayama Prefecture.
15:00: See Tsumekaki Zizo. According to legend, Kobo Daishi drew this on the rock with his fingernails while on a pilgrimage to Kumano, and it is said to cure travelers of illnesses.
16:00: End at Kii Miyahara Station.
