Know before you go

It is mostly a low slope and a cobbled path.

Sparta or Sparti? Sparta of the comic book or the real one? Let's find out about ancient Sparta and how close it was to the movies. We will visit the modern statue of Leonidas, a famous landmark of the area that was inspired by an original statue, and we will visit the Acropolis, which is close by. The Acropolis of Sparta cannot be compared with the one in Athens. We do not have impressive monuments, only a few humble ruins, mostly from later periods of time - Hellenistic and Roman - but we are going to discuss thoroughly the Spartan ways and why and how their culture and mentality differed from the rest of the ancient Greek city-states. We are going to be almost alone - no crowds and no queues - and enjoy the peacefulness of the site in an old olive grove with ruins from the 9th century B.C. to the 20th century, helping us understand the continuity of the site.
