During the Meiji period, large-scale gun batteries were built around Tomogashima, turning the island into a fortress where about 600 soldiers were stationed. Closed to the general public until the end of World War II, the island now offers a fascinating blend of history and nature. Walk past a white lighthouse shining against the cobalt blue sea, explore the ruins of five gun batteries that stir the adventurous spirit, and pass through forest trails where mountaineers train. A local guide who is both a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter and a Forest Instructor will lead the experience.
