Know before you go

  • Tanzania is a popular country in East Africa for visitors due to its many natural attractions, including Zanzibar, Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Tanzanians have a very good reputation in terms of safety and security, and violent crime is extremely rare. Still, nobody ever wants to have an emergency, so it is wise to plan for one just in case. Make sure your travel insurance is comprehensive in scope and covers the risks relevant to your trip.
  • Travel insurance should cover cancellation charges for flights or packages and protect your payments.
  • It should also cover stolen bags and luggage and reimburse you for your belongings.
  • Your insurance policy can also cover medical emergencies and helicopter rescues, such as AMREF Flying Doctors air ambulance services in Africa.
  • Emergency medical evacuation coverage is important if you require immediate evacuation or airlifting.
  • Protection against baggage loss, theft, or damage is recommended.
  • Unexpected emergencies can happen, including at high altitude.
  • Medical coverage for injury or illness while traveling in Tanzania is important, especially considering malaria, other vector-borne diseases, altitude sickness, and traveler's diarrhea.
  • Trip cancellation or interruption protection should cover non-refundable financial penalties such as hotel bookings, flights, and other transportation bookings in case of sudden illness, natural disaster, death in the family, or another emergency.
  • Travel insurance can also be applied for online.
  • Trip cancellation insurance is useful if you are unable to take your trip, especially for expensive international flights.
  • Travel medical insurance is important because of climate conditions, temperature variations, and altitude-related difficulties.
  • Annual multi-trip insurance may be useful if you are planning multiple trips to Tanzania, Kenya, or other countries.
  • Group insurance is also offered by various travel insurance companies.
  • Our local operation managers are always available off the mountain for your assistance.
  • We have protocols in place to launch rescue operations in case of emergencies, and we observe clients' health conditions to help prevent serious medical issues.
  • If you plan to take part in outdoor activities such as game drives, snorkeling, scuba diving, hot air ballooning, or trekking, make sure your insurance covers them too.
  • Africa is currently safe, and Tanzania is very safe. Tanzania also has standard operating procedures in place to contain COVID-19 and ensure your maximum safety.
  • Visas are compulsory for all visitors and cost from $50. They are obtainable at the airport on arrival, but it is better to arrange one before you land. You will need 2 passport photos and 2 completed forms if applying through a Tanzanian Embassy.
  • A Yellow Fever inoculation certificate may be required. It is obtainable from your nearest travel clinic or local physician, and many African countries require this certificate.
  • Zanzibar is situated in a malaria zone, so consult your physician about the right malaria prevention prescription for you. Pregnant women are not allowed to take malaria prevention drugs and should be cautious before entering malaria areas.
  • Bring insect or mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes are more active at night, so cover exposed areas such as your neck and arms, and consider wearing trousers and long-sleeved shirts outdoors in the evening.
  • Anti-histamine cream is useful for irritating bites.
  • Traveler's cheques and cash are accepted at hotels and bureau de change offices. US dollars are the preferred currency, and larger bills such as $50 or $100 often get a better exchange rate.
  • Try to pay for as much as possible in Tanzanian Shillings, and always keep the exchange rate in mind. Bargaining is common.
  • There are a few consulates on the island, but all embassies are situated in Dar Es Salaam.
  • The Yellow Fever vaccination should be acquired at least 10 days before travel to Tanzania and Zanzibar if required for your route.
  • Travel insurance is imperative, even if certificates are not checked at the airport.
  • Light sandals or rubber flip-flops are useful, especially where shoes must be removed before entering. Good walking shoes are recommended if you plan on doing a lot of sightseeing.
  • Bring a raincoat or umbrella if you are traveling in the rainy season.
  • A flashlight is useful in case of power cuts, although many hotels have generator backup systems.
  • Clothes should be light because it is often hot and humid. A jersey or windbreaker is recommended for cooler winter nights. Women are advised to avoid revealing clothes and to keep shoulders covered.
  • There are many internet cafés in major towns and at some hotels and resorts. They are often the best option for non-emergency communication.
  • Electricity is 220/230 V, the same as in the UK and South Africa. US citizens will need an adapter and a transformer if required by their devices.
  • If you are planning to rent a car or motorbike, make sure you have a valid international driver's license.
  • If you plan on driving in Stone Town, be aware that there are many one-way streets and that drivers can be reckless.
  • As with all cities, Zanzibar is not free of crime. Avoid taking valuables on holiday if possible, and keep expensive jewelry locked away or hidden from sight.
  • Be careful not to walk the streets alone at night. If confronted, do not resist and report the matter to the police as soon as possible.
  • The shorter rainy period from October to December often brings thunderstorms that pass over the mountain, with evenings and mornings often becoming very clear afterward.
  • January and February are usually dry, warm, and clear, with brief rain showers that make for good climbing conditions.
  • Although climbing is possible throughout the year, January, February, and September are considered the best months, while July, August, November, and December are also good.
