The route
The fine print
Tungnath: The sacred Tungnath Temple, at an altitude of 3680 meters atop Chandranath Parbat, is the highest shrine among the Panch Kedars and marks the site where the arm of Lord Shiva appeared. The magnificent temple, with a 16-door dome, enshrines a Shivlinga and an idol of Adi Guru Shankaracharya. The temple of Nanda Devi is another important shrine at Tungnath. The peak of Tungnath is considered very sacred, as it is the source of three springs that form the river Akashkamini. The amazing Akashlinga waterfall is truly spectacular, as it seems to descend directly from heaven. The shrine of Tungnath closes during the winter, and the priests move to Mukunath, about 19 km away.
Chandrashila: The shrine of Chandrashila, or the "moon mountain," is another worthwhile site near Tungnath. The beautiful trek to Chandrashila passes through scenic surroundings and takes about 1 hour from the temple.
