Explore North Sumatra on a 7-day journey from Medan through Bukit Lawang, Berastagi, Lake Toba, and Samosir Island. Trek in Gunung Leuser National Park to see orangutans and other wildlife, spend a night camping in the jungle, and hike Mount Sibayak with time to relax at natural hot springs. Along the way, enjoy views of Sinabung Volcano, Sipiso-piso Waterfall, and Lake Toba from the north side. The tour also introduces Batak culture through museums, traditional dancing, weaving villages, and historical sites such as the Stone Chair in Ambarita.

The itinerary

Day 01

Transfer from Medan to Bukit Lawang

  • Bukit Lawang (pass by): I will pick up guests or travellers at the airport or any hotel in Medan. We will then start the journey to Bukit Lawang for the jungle trekking on the next day.

Day 02

Gunung Leuser Jungle Trek and Overnight Camping

  • Gunung Leuser National Park: Our licensed guide will pick you up at the hotel.
  • Start jungle trekking in Gunung Leuser National Park to see orangutans and other wildlife.
  • Spend one night in the jungle at a campsite with a dome tent by a small river. (6 hours)

Day 03

Journey to Berastagi via Sinabung Volcano

  • Berastagi town is located around 66 kilometers (41 miles) south of Medan and about 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) above sea level.
  • Located in the Barisan Mountains area, the mean annual temperature of the district is 18 °C. During the day, the temperature rises above 25 °C, but at night and in the early morning it can drop as low as 12 to 16 °C during the rainy season.
  • On the way to Berastagi, we will stop at the foot of Sinabung Volcano to see the magnificent Sinabung.

Day 04

Hike Mount Sibayak and Relax at the Hot Springs

  • Mount Sibayak: Our licensed guide will lead guests on a hike up Mount Sibayak. There are 2 options to climb the mountain:
    • Sunrise hiking at 04.30 AM
    • Normal hiking at 08.00 AM
  • Continue to the hot spring / natural soda water for relaxation. After that, return to Berastagi town for lunch and a visit to the fruit market.
  • Spend one more night in Berastagi. (6 hours)
  • Admission ticket included.
  • Berastagi Fruit Market: Take a short tour of the fruit market to see and buy typical local fruit.

Day 05

Travel to Lake Toba via Sipiso-piso Waterfall

  • Sipiso-piso Waterfall: On the way to Samosir Island, we will make a short stop at Sipiso-piso Waterfall to enjoy the beauty of Sipiso-piso and Lake Toba from the north side.

Day 06

Batak Heritage Tour Around Samosir Island

  • Samosir Island: Our licensed guide will lead the tour around Samosir Island.
  • The first stop is the Batak Museum and Batak dancing in the Simanindo area. After that, continue to another village to see how Batak women weave Ulos, a special shawl.
  • Lunch in a local restaurant with special fish from the lake.
  • Visit the Stone Chair in Ambarita, where the local guide will explain Batak law in the past.
  • Also visit Suibea Bea Hill, Teletabis Hill, and Efrata Waterfall.

Day 07

Return to Medan or Airport Drop-off

  • Return to Medan via Parapat.
  • Lunch in Pematang Siantar City, then transfer to the airport or any hotel in Medan. Tour finishes.

Notes: During the tour in Bukit Lawang, Berastagi, and Lake Toba, we will see if we still have time to visit some tourist objects besides the itinerary above, which means I am fully flexible on this tour.
