Know before you go

  • Early call time is a must. The whale shark watching activity happens early in the morning (6:00 AM-9:00 AM), when the ocean is calm, the sun is gentle, and visibility is crystal clear.
  • Pick-up starts between 4:00 AM and 4:30 AM, depending on your hotel location.
  • Early arrival ensures shorter waiting time, smoother registration, and better sea conditions.
  • Oslob, South Cebu, is approximately 3 to 3.5 hours by road from Cebu City or Mactan Island.
  • Along the way, you may see fishermen preparing their morning catch, green fields beside the sea, and the sunrise illuminating the coastline.
  • The whale shark experience is a privilege, not a show. These gentle giants, locally called Butanding, are protected marine species under Philippine law.
  • They are not trained or captive; they visit Oslob naturally for plankton feeding.
  • Never touch, chase, or feed the whale sharks.
  • Keep at least 4 meters (13 feet) away when swimming beside them.
  • Move slowly and calmly, as sudden motions may scare them.
  • Use only reef-safe sunscreen, or wear a rash guard instead.
  • Avoid loud noise or splashing.
  • Turn off your camera flash, as bright light may irritate the whale sharks.
  • Use waterproof gadgets or rent GoPros on site.
  • Keep a firm grip on your devices, as phones and sea water do not mix well.
  • Avoid crowding the animal for selfies.
  • Guests are ferried to the whale shark interaction zone using small paddle boats (bancas) rowed by local fishermen.
  • The ride is short, about 50-100 meters offshore, and life vests are provided and must be worn at all times.
  • Attend the mandatory orientation on ethics and safety before entering the water.
  • Remove lotions, perfume, and makeup before the activity, as they can pollute the ocean.
  • Place valuables in a dry bag or locker.
  • Listen carefully to your guides' instructions.
  • Wear your life vest snugly.
  • Expect a wet experience. Bring swimwear, a rash guard, a towel or beach sarong, reef-safe sunscreen, an extra change of clothes, and a waterproof pouch for gadgets and cash.
  • Optional side adventures include Tumalog Falls and Sumilon Island Sandbar.
  • Bring extra cash (PHP 50-PHP 500 per person) for entrance fees, tricycle or motorbike rides, or optional island transfers.
  • Respect the local culture and community in Oslob.
  • Greet locals with a warm "Maayong Buntag!" (Good Morning!).
  • Keep your voice soft and respectful near the boats.
  • Support small local stores and souvenir vendors.
  • Dispose of trash properly and keep the sea and shore clean.
  • Travel sustainably: dispose of trash responsibly, do not step on corals or chase fish, always use biodegradable sunscreen, bring a refillable water bottle, and help spread awareness about ocean preservation.
  • Whale shark watching runs year-round, but the best months are November to May (dry season).
  • During June-October, light rains may occur, but tours still operate safely.
  • In case of rough seas, activities may be delayed or rescheduled.
  • Optional fins and flotation support are available upon request.
  • Optional coconut juice or chilled drinks are available.
