The itinerary

1

Day 01

Arrival, Ridge Hike, Braai, and Night Walk

• Check-in at Danielshoogte will be between 11 am and 12 pm.
• At 2 pm, leave for your first circular hike, which will take you up a rock ledge to a beautiful viewpoint.
• Continue for about 3 km along the top ridge of the mountain and finish at about 6 pm.
• Dinner will be a traditional South African 'braai' (BBQ) at 7 pm.
• Go on a night hike at 8:30 pm to explore the nocturnal life as well as the night sky.
• The night walk will finish by 11 pm.

Day 02

Full-Day Reserve Hike

• Leave at 8 am for a full-day 7.5 km hike through the nature reserve, returning to the accommodation by 5 pm.
• Bring lunch and enough water for the day.
• Dinner will be between 6 pm and 8 pm at your own expense.
  • Optional: A night walk will be available at 8:30 pm for those who would like to participate.

Day 03

Morning Walk and Departure

• Leave for a short walk in another part of the reserve. The walk starts at 8 am and finishes before 12 pm.
• Depart for home at 3 pm.

Know before you go

• Guests travel to Danielshoogte by their own means, but if arranged in advance, a lift for 3 guests can be provided.
• Important to note: This nature reserve and wilderness area does not have laid-out hiking trails, and any extended walks and hikes are only allowed under the guidance of an experienced guide.
• Terrain: mountainous and rocky, with single trails and some farmland.
• Dates: Summer (Oct-April) is the high season for tourists. Winter (May-Sept), or low season, is, however, the more popular time for locals in the mountains, although the weather is less predictable. The cooler weather makes outdoor walking very pleasant.
• Difficulty: The overall rating is moderate. You do not need to be ultra-fit, but you should be able to walk between 5 and 10 km per day and cope with undulating countryside and some hills. The routes also take you up and along stony and rocky outcrops where a little rock scrambling is needed in some places.
• Single bed linen and a towel can be provided at R20 per set on request.
