Hike to remarkable Tigray churches such as Abune Yemata Guh and, if you choose, Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, before visiting Wukro Cherkos Monastery Church and Al-Negash's Mosque. With market visits, mountain scenery, and centuries of religious heritage, this journey offers a memorable look into northern Ethiopia.

The itinerary

Day 01

Airport Pickup and Axum Heritage Tour

  • You will be picked up at the airport at 9:55 AM. It will be a city tour day, during which you will be able to see Axum. The old and historical town of Axum has a remarkable tourism heritage.
  • During your stay in Axum, you will begin sightseeing that morning at the places listed below:
  • The main (northern) stelae field (the Obelisks)
  • Queen Sheba's swimming pool
  • Ezana inscription (from the 4th century)
  • King Kaleb and King Gebremekle tomb
  • Queen Sheba's ruined palace
  • St. Mary of Zion Church (where the Ark of the Covenant is), and the Monastery Church of St. Mary of Zion

Day 02

Saturday Market Experience and Yeha Temple Excursion

  • In the morning after breakfast, you will go to the colorful basket market under the biggest fig tree. It is the only basket market that takes place every Saturday.
  • Then you will go to the whole market, where locals exchange their goods brought from the countryside. You will experience a market that has real meaning for the people.
  • Then in the afternoon, drive 55 km to visit Yeha Temple, the oldest town in the history of East Africa. It likely served as the capital of the pre-Aksumite kingdom of Da'amat.
  • On the way, you will pass through the chained Adwa Mountains, where the Battle of Adwa took place.
  • Then, you will return to Axum in the late afternoon.

Day 03

Abune Yemata Guh and Optional Korkor Churches

  • In the morning after checking out from the hotel, drive for about 3 hours to reach Abune Yemata Guh Monastery Church. It will take 50 minutes of hiking and climbing. This church has the most challenging climb compared to the others, and it is the most beautiful church of all the Tigray churches because of its height and location.
  • As an option, after arriving in Hawzen, drive to the nearest point where the hike begins to Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor Monastery Churches. It takes about 90 minutes or 1 hour and 30 minutes. This is the church with the greatest view and has amazing viewpoints, but it is a bit challenging too.

Note: you can choose what to do from either of the churches on your day 3 overnight in Hawzen.

Day 04

Wukro Cherkos, Al-Negash's Mosque, and Airport Drop-off

  • In the morning, check out from the hotel and drive from Hawzen town to the Tigray churches.
  • On the way, visit Wukro Cherkos Monastery Church from the 13th century and Al-Negash's Mosque, the oldest mosque here in Ethiopia that receives Muslims.
  • After a lunch break in Mekelle, drive to Mekelle Airport to get the flight back to Addis.

Stay overnight in Addis.
