Itinerary
-
Day 1: Kilimanjaro International Aiport to Arusha City
- Upon arriving at Kilimanjaro Airport, a driver cheerfully greets you and transfers you to your booked hotel for overnight and dinner.
- In the evening, you will receive a briefing from the team in preparation for your upcoming trekking tour.
-
Day 2: Londorosi gate to Mti Mkubwa
- Depart from Arusha for Londorossi Gate, a 4-hour journey to complete entry formalities.
- Afterward, drive to the Lemosho trailhead, where the hike begins through undisturbed forest, leading to the first campsite.
-
Day 3: Mti mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
- The trail continues from the rainforest into a savannah with tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rocks covered in lichen.
- As you ascend through rolling hills and cross streams, you will reach Shira Ridge before descending gently to Shira 1 Camp, where you can catch your first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.
-
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut
- Spend a full day exploring the Shira Plateau, walking gently east through moorland meadows to Shira 2 Camp.
- Divert to Moir Hut, a lesser-used site at the base of Lent Hills, where various walks provide excellent acclimatization opportunities. The Shira Plateau is one of the highest plateaus in the world.
-
Day 5: Moir Hut to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
- The day starts with a climb up a ridge, heading southeast to the Lava Tower, a 300-foot volcanic rock formation. You will then descend to Barranco Camp through the unique Senecio Forest, reaching an altitude of 13,000 feet.
- Although you end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitudes aids in acclimatization.
-
Day 6: Barranco camp to Barafu Camp
- After breakfast, leave Barranco and ascend a steep ridge past the Barranco Wall to reach the Karanga Valley campsite. From there, head to the junction with the Mweka Trail and continue to Barafu Hut.
- At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers various summit views. Set up camp, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for summit day. Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible from the site.
-
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Early in the morning, around midnight, you will start your challenging ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The climb is physically and mentally demanding, with extreme wind and cold.
- Trek in darkness, taking frequent short breaks, and be rewarded with a stunning sunrise at Stella Point (18,900 ft) before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
- After summiting, descend to Mweka Hut, stopping for lunch at Barafu. The rocky trail can be tough on the knees, so trekking poles are recommended. Mweka Camp, located in the upper forest, may experience mist or rain in the late afternoon.
- You will enjoy your final dinner on the mountain in the evening and rest well.
