The itinerary

1
Day 01

Journey from Iquitos to Pacaya Samiria

  • Meet your local tour guide at your hotel for pick-up and transfer.

  • Drive south for 1 hour and 45 minutes to arrive in Nauta town. On the way, you will receive a brief description of Iquitos city, its surroundings, and some of its main attractions.

  • Depart by private boat from Nauta port and continue upriver for 3 hours, enjoying the beautiful landscapes and the possibility of seeing grey and pink river dolphins, herons, turtles, many other species, and spectacular flora.

  • Arrive at Santo Domingo community, the checkpoint for entering the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, where the entry permit is obtained.

  • Continue by boat for 30 minutes to reach the community of Buenos Aires.

  • Go on a walking expedition through the primary jungle to look for wildlife and enjoy nature.

  • Set out on a nocturnal hike in search of spiders, snakes, lizards, frogs, or rodents, while listening to the different sounds of nocturnal animals.

  • Overnight at a typical village house in the Buenos Aires community.

Day 02

Pucate River Expedition and Jungle Camping

  • Wake up early to begin your expedition, taking the boat and navigating for around 3 hours along the Pucate River, going deeper and deeper into the primary jungle.

  • Try some artisanal piranha sport fishing, just as the locals do. The guide will instruct you, help you, and provide all the equipment needed.

  • Observe pink dolphins (Inia geoforensics) and grey dolphins, also known as tucuxis.

  • Walk through the virgin rainforest, where you can observe the flora and fauna of the Amazon.

  • Go on a night expedition, looking and listening for nocturnal animals.

  • Camp in the primary jungle.

Day 03

Botanical Walks and Caiman Search

  • Go on a morning botanical walk and get to know different medicinal plants of the Amazon jungle.

  • Learn how to cut and drink from a vine called "Soga de Agua" (water rope).

  • Walk to see the Lupuna, one of the biggest trees in the Amazon rainforest.

  • Go on an expedition looking for primates in their natural habitat.

  • Set out on a nocturnal expedition to find caimans (big river lizards).

  • Camp in the primary jungle.

Day 04

Deeper into the Virgin Jungle

  • Take a 2-hour boat trip to reach your next camping area, deeper in the virgin jungle.

  • Walk through the jungle to find and observe monkeys and other animals.

  • Embark on an excursion to find and observe giant river otters.

  • Camp in the virgin jungle.

Day 05

Early Canoe Ride and Return to Iquitos

  • Go on an early morning canoe excursion to wake up your senses.

  • Enjoy birdwatching at the best time of day to see wild birds in their natural habitat along the riverbank and inside the jungle.

  • Begin your journey back, stopping at the Buenos Aires community to stretch your legs and, if you wish, contribute to the community by buying their handmade handicrafts.

  • Return by boat to Nauta town.

  • Continue by ground transportation from Nauta to Iquitos.

  • Arrive at the office, or, if you prefer, be taken to your accommodation in Iquitos or to the airport.
