Know before you go

  • Trekking Permits: Depending on the region, you may need different permits such as the TIMS (Trekkers' Information Management System) card and permits for specific conservation areas or national parks (e.g., Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, Sagarmatha National Park Permit).
  • Visa: Ensure your visa is up to date. Most travelers can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu Airport.
  • Fitness Level: Trekking in Nepal can be physically demanding, especially at high altitudes. It is important to train and be in good physical condition before your trip.
  • Acclimatization: Altitude sickness is a genuine concern. Take it slow, allow time for acclimatization, and be aware of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) symptoms.
  • Best Seasons: The best times to trek are during the pre-monsoon (spring: March to May) and post-monsoon (autumn: September to November) seasons. These months offer the best weather and clear views.
  • Monsoon Season: Trekking during the monsoon (June to August) is challenging due to heavy rains, leeches, and landslides. Winter (December to February) can be very cold, with snow blocking high passes.
  • Essential Gear: Good-quality trekking boots, layers of clothing, a warm sleeping bag, trekking poles, a first aid kit, and a backpack are essential.
  • Packing Light: Pack only what is necessary. Remember, porters usually have a weight limit (typically 10-12 kg), and carrying too much can be a burden.
  • Travel Insurance: Make sure your travel insurance covers trekking and includes emergency evacuation.
  • Water Purification: Avoid drinking untreated water. Bring purification tablets or a reliable water filter.
  • Local Guides and Porters: Hiring a guide and porter can enhance your experience by providing local knowledge and support. Make sure they are appropriately insured and treated ethically.
  • Respect Local Customs: Nepal is a culturally rich country with diverse ethnic groups. Learn about local customs, dress modestly, and respect local traditions and beliefs.
  • Language: Nepali is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few basic Nepali phrases can be helpful and appreciated.
  • Tea Houses: Most popular trekking routes offer tea houses (lodges) for accommodation. These are basic but comfortable, providing meals and a place to sleep.
  • Food: Expect simple, local dishes like dal bhat (lentil soup with rice), noodles, and momos (dumplings). Always eat freshly cooked food.
  • Leave No Trace: Be mindful of your environmental impact. Carry out trash, avoid using single-use plastics, and respect wildlife.
  • Supporting the Local Economy: Buy locally made products, hire local guides, and stay in locally owned accommodations to support the local economy.
  • Internet and Communication: Wi-Fi is available in many tea houses but can be slow and unreliable. Consider buying a local SIM card for better connectivity.
  • Charging: Electricity is available at tea houses but may not always be accessible. Bring a power bank as a backup.
  • Helicopter Evacuation: In case of severe illness or injury, helicopter evacuation is available, but it is expensive without proper insurance.
  • Local Contacts: Keep emergency contacts handy, including your guide's contact information and the nearest embassy or consulate.
