Use the Marangu route, perhaps the easiest and most comfortable way to reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This well-developed route offers a constant and moderate climb, with only the final approach to the summit being slightly more demanding. Accommodation is in simple mountain huts, which may be an advantage compared to camping routes. Along the way, trek through lush tropical rainforest, enjoy high-altitude views, and aim for Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m.

At sunrise, you will reach Gilman's Point (5,715 m) on the crater rim.

The itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Arusha and Trek Briefing

  • Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and meet your local tour guide for pick-up and transfer. He will take you to Tulia Lodge, where the rest of the day is at leisure.

  • See the town of Arusha (taxi required) or simply relax at the hotel.

  • Be briefed by our team on-site in preparation for the upcoming trekking tour.

  • Spend the night at Tulia Lodge.

2
Day 02

Trek to Mandara Hut via Rainforest

  • Have breakfast at the hotel and move to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1,840 m).

  • Once the necessary paperwork has been completed, begin your trek. You will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest, where you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the thumbless black and white colobus monkeys scrambling through the lush vegetation.

  • Reach your destination for the day, Mandara Hut.

  • Go to Maundi Crater, where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior.

3
Day 03

Hike to Horombo Hut

  • Start with an early breakfast, and shortly after leaving Mandara Hut, you will reach the treeline where the vegetation changes to shrubs.

  • Horombo Hut will come into sight at an altitude of about 3,700 m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo Peak, and the Masai Steppe.

4
Day 04

Acclimatization Trek to Zebra Rocks

  • Allow your body to acclimatize to the altitude. Acclimatization should not be underestimated, as it greatly improves your chances of reaching the summit.

  • After a relaxing breakfast, set off on a 2 to 4-hour trek to Zebra Rocks (3,980 m). The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name.

  • Enjoy a cooked lunch upon reaching the site. Relax in the afternoon and regain your strength for the following day's hike.

5
Day 05

Trek to Kibo Hut

  • Reach your destination, Kibo Hut, in about 5 to 6 hours.

  • Get enough rest, as you will be woken at approximately 23:00 h.

6
Day 06

Summit Uhuru Peak and Descend to Horombo Hut

  • Start in the middle of the night, when the lava ash is still frozen and walking on it is easier. Begin the long and strenuous trek to the summit in the dark. Passing Hans Meyer Cave at 5,200 m, the climb slowly but surely continues upward.

  • At sunrise, you will reach Gilman's Point (5,715 m) on the crater rim.

  • Reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. Now you are standing on the "Roof of Africa".

  • The descent follows the same path, and the lava ash will now have thawed, allowing for a fast descent.

  • Relish a warm meal after reaching back and rest for a while to regain your strength.

  • Continue down to Horombo Hut (3,700 m), where you will arrive in the afternoon.

7
Day 07

Descend to the Park Gate and Return to Arusha

  • Pass through the heather and moor zone to Mandara Hut (2,700 m), where a cooked lunch awaits you. Soon, you will again be in the lush tropical rainforest, and after about 6 hours of trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park gate (1,860 m).

  • Go back to Tulia Lodge.

  • Have a warm shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. You will have dinner and spend the night at the Green Hills of Africa.
