The experience includes 1 night of jungle camping at "Mirador Palo Alto," a 3-story observation tower that provides a bird's-eye view of the lowland Peruvian Amazon. During this Iquitos jungle tour, travelers will enjoy some of the most popular activities in the region, including a nighttime caiman excursion, visits to lagoons, bird-watching, piranha fishing, rainforest hikes, a visit with native Amazonian tribes, canoe rides, and the chance to see pink river dolphins.

The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arrival in the Amazon and Monkey Island Visit

  • Morning departure from Iquitos City by vehicle to the port town of Nanay (Bellavista), where the Río Nanay meets the Río Amazonas. After departing by boat, we will travel downriver for 70 km, about 2 hours. During the riverboat trip, there is a great possibility of seeing caimans, turtles, herons, pink river dolphins, snakes, and many other species of flora and fauna along the riverbank.
  • Visit Monkey Island, a small island about 15 minutes from Maniti Lodge that shelters a large number of monkeys in their natural habitat. During your visit, you will have the unique opportunity to observe and interact with a wide variety of monkeys, including sloths, Goeldi's monkey, tamarin monkey, capuchin monkey, yellow-handed titi monkey, masked titi monkey, cebidae monkey, woolly monkey, squirrel monkey, spider monkey, South American coati monkey, and many more. Along with the various species of monkeys, you will also have the opportunity to hold very large anacondas and boas, and interact with the very unique and rare Amazonian mata-mata turtle. At Monkey Island, we will also see alligators, turtles, toucans, macaws, parrots, and more.
  • Dolphin-watching session at the camp, where we will have the unique opportunity to see the pink freshwater dolphin. If we are lucky, we will also have the chance to swim with them on the main Amazon River.
  • In the evening, we will go on a nocturnal nature hike to see what types of species can be found, such as lizards, snakes, spiders, and monkeys.
  • Overnight at Maniti Eco-Lodge.

Day 02

Sunrise Wildlife, Fishing, and Caiman Excursion

  • We will begin our day early, waking up in time to see the sunrise over the Amazon River. Then we will leave the camp for an animal observation excursion by boat, where we will have the opportunity to see various types of flora and fauna.
  • Afternoon fishing excursion by boat, with the opportunity to catch piranha, catfish, and other species of fish.
  • Viewing of Victoria Regia, the largest freshwater aquatic plant in the world.
  • After sunset, we will go on an excursion by canoe to spot and catch caiman. We will have the opportunity to hold, touch, and take photos with the caiman.
  • Overnight at Maniti Eco-Lodge.

Day 03

Village Visit, Lagoons, and Night Walk

  • Morning visit to a local village to learn about and observe the local people's daily life and customs.
  • In the afternoon, we will visit lagoons and tributaries close to Maniti Lodge. Here, we can enjoy a variety of activities depending on the tourist's interests, such as jungle hiking, canoe rides, fishing, plant education, animal observation, or simply relaxing with a nice cool swim in one of the lagoons or in the Amazon River.
  • We will begin our day early, waking up in time to see the sunrise over the Amazon River, and then we will leave the camp for an animal observation excursion by boat, where we will have the opportunity to see various types of flora and fauna.
  • In the evening, we will go on a nocturnal nature hike to see what types of species can be found, such as lizards, snakes, spiders, and monkeys.

Day 04

Palo Alto Jungle Hike and Canopy Overnight

  • Morning jungle hike (30-45 minutes) with destination "Palo Alto."

  • The unique attraction "Palo Alto Mirador" is a lookout point with 3 different observation deck levels. Here, guests have a bird's-eye view of the lowland Peruvian Amazon from 5, 10, and 15 meters above the ground. Here we will have the opportunity to spend the night, with excellent chances to observe various species of wildlife in their natural habitat.

  • Daytime exploration of the area includes hiking, a canoe ride in the lagoon, and fishing, depending on the passenger's request.

  • In the evening, we will go on a nighttime nature walk to see what types of species can be found, such as reptiles, spiders, and monkeys.

  • Overnight at the top observation deck of Palo Alto, setting up a tent or sleeping in hammocks.

Day 05

Bird-Watching, Lagoons, and Night Boat Excursion

  • Morning bird-watching session from "Palo Alto."
  • Today we will visit some lagoons located close to Maniti Camp Lodge, near the Río Napo. They hold a great variety of palms, large trees, and beautiful landscapes.
  • Here we can enjoy a variety of activities, depending on the passenger, such as trekking, canoe rides, fishing, plant identification, bird-watching, or simply relaxing with a nice cool swim in one of the lagoons.
  • In the late afternoon, we will return to Maniti Lodge to have lunch.
  • After dark, we will go on an excursion by boat in search of white and black caiman, as well as various night birds and other reptiles. This also gives us the enjoyable opportunity to hear the symphony of sounds that comes from the forest at night.
  • Overnight at Maniti Eco-Lodge.

Day 06

Río Napo Exploration and Optional Rainforest Camping

  • We will begin our day early, waking up in time to see the sunrise over the Amazon River. After breakfast, we will depart by private boat from Maniti Lodge with destination Río Napo.

  • Upon arrival, the guides will set up the campsite for the night and cook lunch.

  • Daytime exploration of the area includes hiking, a canoe ride in the lagoon, and fishing, depending on the passenger's request.

  • At night, after dinner, we will take a boat excursion to search for various species of nocturnal animals. This also gives us the enjoyable opportunity to hear the symphony of sounds that comes from the forest at night.

  • Optional overnight rainforest camping in tents on the banks of Río Napo. If the passenger does not choose to camp, we will return to Maniti Eco-Lodge.

Day 07

Final Jungle Hike and Return to Iquitos

  • Early morning jungle hike, where we will have the unique opportunity to see a vast number of monkeys, birds, and much other wildlife in their natural habitat. We will also see and learn about various types of Amazonian plants.
  • Departure from the campsite with destination Iquitos City.
  • Visit with a local native Indian tribe to learn about and observe their history and customs.
  • Transfer to the airport or hotel. End of service.

Know before you go

  • We do not have weight restrictions for luggage, but we kindly request that each guest limit their luggage to 23 kg or 50 lb. If your luggage weighs more than this, you can store the extra luggage in Iquitos at our office in our secure storage room until your trip ends.
  • Transfers: We offer pick-up services from Iquitos airport (between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM) or any hotel within Iquitos city. Transfers are included only on the day the tour begins. At the end of your tour, we can drop you off at Iquitos airport or at a location in Iquitos city.
