Know before you go

  • The Pyramids of Giza, located on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, are one of the most iconic and enduring symbols of ancient civilization.
  • Constructed over 4,500 years ago during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, these monumental structures were built as tombs for the pharaohs Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure.
  • The pyramids' smooth, angled sides symbolized the sun's rays and were designed to help the king's soul ascend to heaven and join the gods, particularly the sun god 'Ra'.
  • Ancient Egyptians believed that when the king died, part of his spirit, known as "ka," remained with his body.
  • To properly care for his spirit, the corpse was mummified, and everything the king would need in the afterlife was buried with him, including gold vessels, food, furniture, and other offerings. Their riches would provide not only for him but also for the relatives, officials, and priests who were buried nearby.
  • Situated near the Pyramids of Giza on the west bank of the Nile River is a colossal limestone statue with the body of a lion and a human head, believed to represent the pharaoh Khafre.
  • Carved during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, likely around 2500 BCE, it stands as one of the world's largest and oldest monumental sculptures.
  • Measuring about 20 meters (66 feet) in height and 73 meters (240 feet) in length, the Sphinx captivates with its enigmatic expression and mysterious aura.
