Day 01

Angkor Thom, Angkor Wat, and Sunset at Phnom Bakheng

  • In the morning, visit Angkor Thom, which comprises:

    • Bayon Temple - the state temple of Jayavarman VII and one of the most enigmatic and powerful religious constructions in the world.

    • Baphuon - a vast temple near the center of Angkor Thom.

    • Elephant Terrace - the heart of Angkor Thom, overlooking the Royal Square.

    • Leper King Terrace - this massive terrace is named after the 15th-century sculpture that was discovered on top of it.

  • Enter Angkor Thom through the monumental South Gate, with an avenue of gods and asuras lining the bridge across the moat.

  • In the afternoon, visit Angkor Wat and enjoy sunset at Phnom Bakheng. Built between the 9th and 14th centuries, the temples of Angkor are among the grandest monuments ever constructed. Among the 30 temples accessible today, the most famous is Angkor Wat, the largest religious building in the world. Unlike most other Khmer temples, it faces west, most likely because the temple was dedicated to Vishnu.

  • Admire the sunset from Bakheng Hill, which in the late 9th century was the state temple of the first capital of Angkor. The view from the top is magnificent, particularly of Angkor Wat to the southeast, and it is the most popular spot for visitors at sunset.

Day 02

Banteay Srei, Pre Rup, Neak Pean, and Ta Som

  • In the morning, depart for the jewel of Angkor, Banteay Srei, known as the "Citadel of the Women" or "Citadel of Beauty," presumably referring to its size and the delicacy of its decoration.

  • On the way back from Banteay Srei, see the beautiful brick temple of Pre Rup.

  • Visit Neak Pean, composed of five ponds in the middle of the Jayatataka reservoir. The man-made 70-meter-square pond is surrounded by four smaller ponds.

  • Explore Ta Som, a small monastic complex with face-tower gopuras, many of whose carvings show uncommon individuality. A huge tree grows from the top of the eastern gopura.

Day 03

Kravan Temple, Ta Prohm, Ta Keo, and Tonle Sap Floating Village

  • In the morning, visit Kravan Temple, known for some of the best brick carvings in the country. It was built by a group of gurus in 921, and then continue to Banteay Kdei.

  • Explore Ta Prohm, also known as the Tomb Raider Temple, built in 1186 in the 12th century by Jayavarman VII as a royal monastery.

  • Also visit Ta Keo Temple, Chausay, and Thommanon Temple.

  • In the afternoon, visit the Floating Village on Tonle Sap Lake (Great Lake), as well as Artisan Angkor (fine arts school) and a local market.
