Day 01

Discover Mafalala's Social and Political Legacy

During the Portuguese occupation, Maputo was marked by racial and social division. There were cement houses with good living conditions for the Portuguese, while black Mozambicans lived in reed houses with poor infrastructure and limited water and electricity supply.
It was home to former presidents Samora Machel, Joaquim Chissano, and Pascoal Mocumbi, as well as Eusébio da Silva, considered one of Portugal's greatest football players.
Olympic gold medalist Maria Mutola was also discovered there.
During the Portuguese occupation, Mafalala represented not only a geographical division but also a racial one. This division was marked by Marien Nguambi Avenue, where one side was occupied by a minority Portuguese population and the other by the black majority, who lived with poor infrastructure and limited access to electricity and water. Even so, it was also a place of opportunity for many Mozambicans who wanted to improve their lives and become known around the world. Some of the country's greatest writers, politicians, journalists, musicians, athletes, and football players lived in Mafalala.

Day 02

Visit the Historic Maputo Fortress

It was turned into a military museum in 1955.
There is a statue of Mouzinho de Albuquerque, António Enes, and the coffin of Ngungunhane, the king of the Gaza Empire.
There are handicrafts representing the history of Mozambique before, during, and after the Portuguese occupation.

Day 03

Admire the Maputo Central Railway Station

The station was opened on 19 March 1910, and it was ranked the 3rd most beautiful railway station by the USA magazine Times in 2016.

Day 04

Shop and Explore at the Central Market

Opened in 1903, its building is believed to be a replica of Aster Hall, a building in the German city of Hamburg.
You can buy fruits, cashew nuts, fish, meat, moringa, aromatic herbs and spices, as well as handicrafts and souvenirs.

Day 05

See the Cathedral de Nossa Senhora da Conceição

It was designed by Engineer Marcial Freitas and opened in 1944. The idea to build it came from the governor of Mozambique, Sebastião José Alves, in the 1930s to expand the congregation of European Christians.
It was visited by Pope João II in 1988.

Day 06

Stroll Through the Botanical Garden

It was built by Thomas Honey, and the entrance is shaped like an archway built in the Manuelino architectural style.
Within the gardens, there are different native and exotic plants and trees from Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Day 07

Visit the Iconic Iron House

It was built by Eiffel and brought here to serve as the house of the Governor-General of Mozambique.
Today, it is used by the National Directorate for Cultural Heritage.

Day 08

Explore the Natural History Museum

It was built as a school in 1911 and converted into a museum in 1933.
The building is inspired by the Manuelino style, a Gothic Portuguese style of the early twentieth century, and it is located in the Ponta Vermelha neighbourhood.
It displays many embalmed Mozambican species, as well as the famous Big Five: leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, and buffalo.
The museum also possesses an important collection of antique sculptures representing the ethnic groups of Mozambique.
Its main attraction is the complete collection of elephant fetuses, showing the different months of gestation from the 1st up to the 22nd month, which is considered a unique collection in the world.

Day 09

Browse FEIM Handcraft Market

There you can buy anything from handicrafts of the Maconde ethnic group and souvenirs to painted birds or carved wooden heads, and taste traditional Mozambican food.

Day 10

See Santo António da Polana Church

It was built in 1962 by engineer Nuno Lopes.
It was inspired by modern Brazilian architecture.
It has a pyramidal structure in the form of an inverted flower; some people say it looks like a lemon squeezer.
