The itinerary

Day 01

To Janjangbureh via Wassu and River Gambia National Park

  • We start early and drive through the south bank towards Yelli Tenda ferry crossing to cross the River Gambia before continuing our drive towards Janjangbureh - a typical African start to the day for many local traders.
  • On arrival at Bamba Tenda, we drive to Farafenni, then head east along the north bank of the River Gambia, passing through various villages on this long but worthwhile journey to Georgetown, now known as Janjangbureh.
  • En route, we stop at Wassu to explore the area of the mysterious stone circles recognized by UNESCO on its World Heritage Site list. The area is believed to be an ancient burial site.
  • We arrive at Kuntaur in time for lunch and then enjoy an afternoon boat cruise through River Gambia National Park, where sightings can include hippos, monkeys, crocodiles, and baboons. We can slow down in this area for possible chimpanzee sightings. Fabulous species of birds are all around, including kites, rollers, geese, fish eagles, buzzards, hornbills, and kingfishers.
  • Dinner is served at Baobolong Annex camp, followed by entertainment from a cultural group of villagers performing local dances.

Day 02

Janjangbureh Walk and Return via Villages and Market

  • After breakfast, we will explore the island on foot, visit Janjangbureh town, or relax before departing.
  • During the return journey, there will be a stop at a 'Lumo' weekly market if it is a market day, provided there is one en route. Here, you will find everything from livestock, hardware, food, and clothes to a colourful display of products.
  • After relaxing, we continue westwards, taking in various villages with a stop at a traditional family compound where possible.

Please note that the itinerary will be subject to change by overlapping the stops on day 1 and 2 depending on the ferry situation and road conditions. This is, without a doubt, a trip of a lifetime.
