American D-Day Sites from Sainte-Mère-Église to Colleville-sur-Mer
Program of the day:
1. Sainte-Mère-Église & Airborne Museum (if you do not wish to visit it, no problem - we can add time elsewhere or visit another museum)
Start your trip by visiting Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first villages liberated by the American paratroopers. Do not miss the famous church with the mannequin of paratrooper John Steele hanging from its bell tower.
Next, explore the Airborne Museum, dedicated to the American airborne troops of the 82nd and 101st divisions, with its interactive exhibits, impressive Waco CG-4 glider, and two C-47 aircraft.
2. Utah Beach
Head to Utah Beach, where American troops successfully landed with relatively few casualties. We will drive along the beach and stop at Sainte Marie-du-Mont.
3. Lunch at Café Roosevelt (12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.)
Take a break at Café Roosevelt, a restaurant full of history located near Utah Beach. Enjoy a friendly meal in an authentic setting inspired by the 1940s.
4. Pointe du Hoc
After lunch, head to Pointe du Hoc, where American Rangers scaled the cliffs under enemy fire to neutralize German guns. This impressive site still bears witness to the fierce fighting, with its bomb craters and ruined bunkers.
5. Omaha Beach
Continue your visit to Omaha Beach, nicknamed "Bloody Omaha" because of the heavy losses suffered by American troops. This beach, now peaceful, preserves memorials and remains that recall the brutality of the fighting.
6. Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery
End the day with a moment of reflection at the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery, where nearly 9,400 soldiers rest. This moving site, with its white crosses lined up facing the ocean, is a poignant tribute to the sacrifice of these men.
This day will immerse you in the history of the landings and allow you to better understand the events of June 6, 1944, and their repercussions. An unforgettable experience!
