Know Before You Go

Georgia is an Orthodox Christian country with specific rules for entering churches.

Women should not wear trousers, shorts, short skirts, or have bare shoulders when entering churches. They can wear a long skirt or wrap a large scarf around themselves. Most churches provide wraparound dresses for borrowing.

Women must cover their heads with a scarf when entering a church.

It's advisable for women to carry 1 or 2 scarves to ensure readiness and ease of entering churches in Georgia.

Men are prohibited from wearing shorts or showing bare shoulders when entering churches. They must wear full-length trousers and cover their shoulders, or they may be denied entry or required to wear a wraparound dress.

Men should remove any type of hat before entering a church.

Metekhi Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary:

One of the oldest churches in Tbilisi, dating back to the 6th century.

Erected by King Vakhtang I Gorgasali, alongside a castle and palace, serving as his residence.

Symbolized the temple of the Virgin Mary in the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem.

Sometimes referred to as Shuris-tsikhe or "The Rival Fortress."

Fortress walls date from various periods, with the earliest from the 4th century.

Known as the "Mother Fortress" in Georgian sources.

Abanotubani, Baths District:

One of the oldest districts in Tbilisi.

Named after the baths built on naturally hot mineral waters known since ancient times.

Sioni Complex:

Includes a fence, the Cathedral of the Assumption, and two bell towers.

Derived from the name of a sacred mountain in Jerusalem, meaning "sunny" in Hebrew.

Many churches in Georgia are named after Sioni, all dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Rezo Gabriadze's Puppet Theater:

Located on Shavteli Street in the old part of Tbilisi.

First Georgian puppet theater, built in 1981 by Rezo Gabriadze.

Features unique architecture and is a popular sight in Tbilisi.

Clock tower with a golden angel that rings the bell hourly.

Offers a puppet show titled "Circle of Life" twice daily at 12:00 and 19:00.

Anchiskhati Cathedral:

Three-nave basilica dating back to the 6th century, the oldest church in Tbilisi.

Originally named the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

Connected with the icon of the Savior from Anchi Monastery in South Georgia since 1664.

The icon of the Savior of Anchi is an exemplary Georgian stamping, carved by Beka Opizari, currently housed in the Georgian National Museum.

What To Bring

Women need scarves to enter churches (to cover their head).

Depending on the weather may need a raincoat or an umbrella, some hats to get cover from the sun.
