Day 01

Journey to Olpopongi Maasai Village

• Depart from Moshi or Arusha towards the Maasai village located near Mount Kilimanjaro.

• Arrive at the village and receive a warm welcome from the Maasai people.

• Witness traditional Maasai dances and songs, and learn about the Maasai way of life, including nomadic pastoralism and gender roles.
• Observe daily activities within the village, such as beadwork or food preparation.
• Witness a goat or sheep slaughtering demonstration, up to the point of preparation for cooking.

• Meeting Maasai tribes is on many people's bucket lists after seeing photos of Maasai warriors jumping high in the air, with the African savanna as their backdrop. Many safari companies offer a stop at Olpopongi Maasai Village, promising a wonderful experience.
• At the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, on the border between Moshi and Arusha, lies one of the many homes of one of the most famous tribes in Tanzania: the Maasai. The Maasai are one of only two tribes in Tanzania, the other being the Bushman, who retain their original culture and practices. The Maasai practice a way of life called nomadic pastoralism.
• This is where people move with their cattle to find suitable grazing areas before returning to their home base. Within the Maasai tribe, the men and older children move with the cattle, taking care of them as they graze, while the women stay at home and care for the household and younger children.
• By travelling and spending a day in one of their villages, you will gain true insight into the way they live.
• After witnessing many of their original traditions, you will have the opportunity to see the process of a goat or sheep being slaughtered, right up to the point where it is put on the barbecue and cooked. If you wish, you can then take part in a traditional Maasai feast. It is a truly unique and insightful day that you will definitely never forget.
