Visit the Celestial Pond of Cheonjiyeon Waterfall

  • Cheonjiyeon, which means a pond where heaven and earth meet, features a waterfall with a height of 22 meters and a pond below that reaches a depth of 20 meters, earning it the nickname of a celestial pond.
  • To the southwest of Cheonjiyeon Falls lies a dense forest of evergreen trees such as camphor and camellia, forming a lush temperate forest that remains cool even in midsummer.
  • Designated as Natural Monument No. 163, the evergreen Japanese cedar trees in this forest mark the natural boundary line, while the entire forest itself is designated as Natural Monument No. 379, ensuring strict protection against logging, plant collection, and wildlife hunting.
  • The deep pool below the waterfall, with a depth of 20 meters, is famous as a habitat for blind cave eels, a species of catadromous fish that spawn in the sea and return to freshwater rivers or lakes.
  • These eels hide in deep waters during the day and come out to shallow areas at night to feed, with some reaching lengths of up to 2 meters and weighing around 20 kilograms.
  • As Cheonjiyeon Falls marks the northern distribution limit of blind cave eels, it has been designated as Natural Monument No. 27.
  • With its rich ecological significance and natural beauty, Cheonjiyeon Falls can truly be called a treasure trove of natural monuments.
