The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and Transfer to Arusha

  • Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Pick up and transfer to Kizumba House or a similar property.

Overnight stay at Kizumba House.

Accommodation includes bed and breakfast.

Alternatively, similar overnight arrangements can be provided.

Day 02

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut Through the Rainforest

  • Leave Kizumba House at about 7:30 a.m.
  • Drive to Marangu Gate on the eastern side of Kilimanjaro.
  • Complete the necessary paperwork at the park gate, including registration.
  • Begin hiking at about 10:30 a.m.
  • Hike through the rainforest from the park gate to Mandara Hut.

Duration: Approximately 4 hours

Stop halfway for lunch during the hike.

  • Reach the Mandara Huts at about 2:00 or 3:00 p.m.
    • Unpack, rest, and enjoy some tea or coffee.
  • Dinner is served in the early evening, at about 7:00 p.m. Consider a side trip to Maundi Crater, about 15 minutes away, for scenic views of Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

Bathrooms with running water are available at Mandara Huts.

Day 03

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut with Views of Mawenzi

  • Wake up for breakfast at approximately 7:30 a.m. and pack for the next leg of the journey.
  • Break camp at about 8:30 a.m. and hike to Horombo Hut.

Duration: 5 to 6 hours

  • Traverse through lower heathland, where small shrubs are the primary vegetation.
  • Stop halfway for lunch and enjoy amazing views of Mawenzi during the hike.
  • The summit of Kibo can be seen from Horombo Huts.
  • Arrive at Horombo Huts at about 3:00 p.m. Rest, unpack, and prepare for dinner.

Bathrooms with running water are available at Horombo Huts.

Altitude: 2,720 m - 3,720 m

Hiking time: 5-6 hours

Day 04

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut Across the Saddle

  • Wake up for breakfast as usual. If you are awake before sun-up, capture some great sunrise photos.
  • Pack for the day's journey and begin the hike to Kibo Huts.
    • The first half of the day's hike traverses the upper heathland.
    • The second half crosses the vast saddle connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. Be cautious and watch for signs of altitude sickness.

Stop halfway for lunch.

The saddle is an alpine desert resembling a lunar landscape.

There is no running water at Kibo Huts.

Altitude: 3,720 m - 4,720 m

Hiking time: 5 - 6 hours

Day 05

Midnight Summit Push to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Horombo

  • Wake up at around midnight for a light breakfast and prepare for the summit ascent.
  • The ascent is carried out in the early morning before dawn.
    • Depart at about 1:00 a.m.
    • Reach Gilman's Point at about 7:00 a.m.
    • Enjoy views of the crater from Gilman's Point on the Crater Rim.
  • Another 2 hours of hiking brings the climber to Uhuru Peak at about 8:30 a.m.
  • Descend back to Kibo Huts.
  • Collect your belongings at Kibo Huts.
  • Cross the saddle again to Horombo Huts.

Spend the night at Horombo Huts.

Eat dinner and get some well-deserved sleep.

Altitude: 4,720 m - 5,895 m

Hiking time: 7 hours

Day 06

Descend to Marangu Gate and Return to Arusha

  • Wake up, pack, and descend to Mandara Huts.
  • Have lunch at Mandara Huts, then continue to the park gate.

Duration: Until around 2:00 or 3:00 p.m.

  • Meet your transportation back to Arusha and drive back for a long-overdue hot shower.

Overnight at Kizumba House on a bed and breakfast basis, or similar.

Day 07

Departure from Moshi to Kilimanjaro Airport

  • Depart for the airport or other destinations in Tanzania or Kenya.
  • Consider Zanzibar as a great post-climb trip.
  • Explore other trips around the tourist city of the Arusha region.
    • Arrangements can be made at a reasonable price.

  • Acute Mountain Sickness is dangerous.
