Day 01

Trek Through Villages to Magamba Rainforest

  • After breakfast, get picked up at the hotel and start walking with your packed lunch through the villages uphill to the Magamba rainforest. Spend the night at Bush Baby Homestay and Campsite in Lukozi. This is a day of trekking through the natural forest, home to black and white Columbus monkeys, two-horned chameleons, and lovely landscapes along the way. The lodge offers a neat, self-contained local room.

The approximate trekking distance covered is 21 km.

Day 02

Village Trek and Cultural Encounters at Rangwi

  • Start trekking through the villages of Mgwashi and surrounding farming areas, then spend the night at Rangwi Sister's Convent. Enjoy the lovely landscape and the chance to interact with local ethnic groups in traditional villages, learn traditional ways of living, and visit traditional irrigation practices used by the Shambaa. This is also a day to learn about medicinal and spiritual herbs along the way. Have lunch at the convent.

Accommodation is basic and neat, with shared toilets.

Day 03

Pottery Workshop and Mtae Escarpment Hike

  • Trek through the villages to the pottery village for a workshop, then continue along the escarpment of the Usambara Mountains to Mtae. This world-class viewpoint offers about 180-degree views over Tsavo West in Kenya, and the trek proceeds to Mabughai for the pottery workshop.
  • Visit the pottery workshop and learn how to make pots using clay soil.
  • Continue hiking along the escarpment of the Usambara Mountains while enjoying lovely views of the plains.
  • Have lunch at Magumba View Cottages and stay overnight there.

Day 04

Return Journey to Lushoto

  • Early in the morning, take public or private transport and arrive in Lushoto the same morning.
  • You can connect with buses departing for Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Moshi, or Arusha.

Driving distance: 63 km.
