Embark on a captivating 4-day trek through the Simien Mountains, starting with a scenic drive from Gondar to Sankaber. Choose to trek or drive to Sankaber, where you may encounter gelada baboons and take in breathtaking landscapes. Continue from Sankaber to Geech Camp for panoramic views over the foothills and the Jinbar River plunging into the Geech Abyss. The trek then leads to Chennek via Imet Gogo and Innateye Valley before culminating at Buwahit Peak (4,430 m), where endemic species such as the Walia Ibex and Ethiopian Red Fox may be spotted.

At Imet Gogo, you will reach an altitude of 3,926 m and enjoy fantastic 360-degree views of the landscape.

Day by day

The itinerary

Day 01

Gondar to Sankaber via Debark

Depart early in the morning from Gondar to Debark. In Debark, arrange your visit with the park office, receive your scout and guide, and then drive into the park to arrive at Sankaber.
You can either drive all the way into Sankaber or have the car drop you off near Buyit Ras for a short hike.
If you choose to hike in, you will enjoy beautiful views of the landscape and the endless mountain ridges, and you will likely see some gelada baboons.
Upon arrival in Sankaber, you will be met with your supplies. Sankaber will be the first campsite on your trip.

Day 02

Trek from Sankaber to Geech Camp

From Sankaber, begin hiking along the ridge and look out over the foothills, which lie 800 m below.
From the ridge, descend into the valley and view the Jinbar River plunging into the Geech Abyss.
After spending some time at the waterfall, continue to Geech village, where you will find your second campsite.

Day 03

Geech to Chennek via Imet Gogo and Innateye Valley

After breakfast, set out on a 7-8 hour hike through some of the best views in the Simien Mountains. En route, you will pass through Imet Gogo.
At Imet Gogo, you will reach an altitude of 3,926 m and enjoy fantastic 360-degree views of the landscape. From this height and viewpoint, you can see the canyon below, distant ridges, and seemingly never-ending valleys.
After Imet Gogo, hike to the viewpoint of Innateye Valley at an altitude of 4,070 m. Lunch will be here, and then you will descend to Chennek (3,600 m) for your third campsite.

Day 04

Buwahit Peak and Return to Gondar

Have breakfast at the campsite, then take a 2-hour hike up to Buwahit Peak.
Here, you will stand on the second-highest peak in the Simien Mountains at 4,430 m. This is also where many visitors can see endemic animals such as the Walia Ibex and Ethiopian Red Fox.
After spending time at the peak, hike back down to Chennek for lunch and transportation back to Debark/Gondar.
