The itinerary

Day 01

Arrival in Addis Ababa and Coffee-Focused City Tour

  • Arrive at Bole International Airport and transfer to your hotel with our staff member.
  • For the rest of the day, head out on a city tour to visit Mt Entoto, Trinity Cathedral, Merkato, St. George Church, and coffee houses such as Robert, Hadero, and Tomoca, where you can explore different coffee beans from all over the country.

Day 02

Fly to Jimma and Visit Forest Coffee Plantations

  • Have breakfast, then fly to Jimma.
  • Visit forest coffee plantations outside Jimma town, such as Beda Bunna coffee farmland.
  • Go to coffee shops and houses where you can enjoy coffee produced in the Jimma region.

Day 03

Drive to Kaffa Region and Explore Bonga

  • Today, drive to the Kaffa region, the birthplace of coffee, where much of the country's coffee production comes from.
  • Upon arrival in Bonga town, enjoy lunch and continue to visit the traditional house of the Kaffa people.
  • Drive to Adiyo Falls, Dadiben, and Gora Hot Springs.
  • During the hiking trip, visit a coffee plantation and several shops in Jimma.

Day 04

Trek to Mankira Village and Wild Coffee Forests

  • After breakfast, trek to Mankira village, a specific area where Coffea arabica is believed to have first been discovered by the legendary goat herder known as "Kaldi".
  • Here, you will see forest coffee plantations growing in the wild, along with more visits to cooperative associations and coffee processing centres.
  • En route, stop at the ancient church of Adaracha Medhanealem and the Gurguto Natural Bridge.
  • Then return to Bonga for your hotel.

Drive to Mizan Teferi via Coffee Farmlands

  • Have breakfast, then enjoy a full-day drive to Mizan Teferi.
  • Visit coffee farmlands and coffee processing shops along the way.

Day 06

Full Day at Bebeka State Coffee Plantation

  • Have an early breakfast at your hotel and drive to the Bebeka State coffee plantation.
  • Travel to Bebeka, 30 km from Mizan Teferi, and spend the whole day visiting the oldest and most significant state-owned coffee plantation in Ethiopia.
  • See the growing stages of coffee plants, from seedlings to coffee bean stages.
  • After a picnic lunch, continue visiting the farmland, including enjoying coffee in a nearby local village, before returning to Mizan.

Day 07

Return to Jimma via Wush-Wush Tea Plantation

  • After breakfast, drive back to Jimma using the same road as before.
  • On the way, stop at one of the oldest state-owned tea plantations in Ethiopia, Wush-Wush, then continue to Bonga for lunch.

Day 08

King Aba Jiffar Palace and Drive to Butajira

  • In the morning, drive to the palace of King Aba Jiffar, located in the northern section of the town.
  • Then proceed to Butajira, with a lunch stop at Negash Lodge in Wolliso town.

Day 09

Rift Valley Drive, Abijata-Shalla and Sidama Coffee Lands

  • After breakfast, drive through the Rift Valley region to the lakeside town of Hawassa.
  • On the way, visit Abijata-Shalla Lakes National Park.
  • Have lunch in Shashemene, then proceed to the Wondo Genet public resort area with natural hot springs.
  • Walk into the Sidama coffee farmlands and experience the typical coffee ceremony of the Sidama people.
  • In the late afternoon, head to Awassa City, situated on the eastern side of Lake Awassa.

Day 10

Awassa Fish Market, Yirgalem Forest Walk and Campfire

  • After breakfast, drive to Awassa Fish Market, where locals buy and sell the daily catch.
  • Leave Awassa town and head south to the small village of Yirgalem using the main road leading to Kenya.
  • Along the way, enjoy traditional Sidama houses encircled by coffee and enset (false banana) plantations.
  • After lunch, leave the beautiful Aregash Lodge and walk deep into the natural forest surrounded by lush, green coffee, enset, and other trees.
  • Here, you will be invited into one of the Sidama houses, where you will experience the preparation of enset/false banana food and taste their delicious Sidama coffee.
  • At night, enjoy a campfire and wild hyena feeding, as the hyenas come to the fireplace for their dinner.

Day 11

Yirgachefe Coffee Cooperatives and Processing Centres

  • Drive through a very green landscape to reach Yirgachefe village, where one of Ethiopia's most popular coffee beans is harvested.
  • Visit the Yirga Cheffe coffee cultivating and processing centre, where some of the best coffee brands are prepared for local and export use.
  • This is also an area where you can visit several coffee cooperatives and plantations.

Day 12

Coffee Farms of Hagre Mariam and Tutu Fela Stelae

  • Spend the day in Dilla, including a day trip to Hagre Mariam to visit coffee farms, plantations, and cooperatives such as Hadeso.
  • After lunch, drive back to Dilla with a short stop at the ancient grave stelae of Tutu Fela, which stand as testimonies to death cults of past millennia.

Return to Addis Ababa via Lake Ziway

  • Drive directly to Addis Ababa.
  • En route, visit Lake Ziway, known for its variety of aquatic bird species.

Fly to Dire Dawa and Continue to Harar Coffee Country

  • After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Dire Dawa.
  • Drive to Garamuleta, where some of the best coffee production in the Harar region is located.
  • Visit private coffee farms and cooperatives in the surrounding area.
  • Proceed to Harar with a stop at Aweday Chat Market, where chat is abundantly cultivated for local use and export markets.

Day 15

Harar Coffee Visits and the Hyena Man Show

  • Spend the day in Harar, including a visit to Gursum village to see small coffee farmlands and processing centres, then return to the hotel for lunch.
  • In the afternoon, tour Harar, including a coffee processing and packing shop.
  • In the evening, enjoy the Hyena Man show, a tradition of feeding wild hyenas at night that has continued for many centuries.

Return to Addis Ababa and Ethiopian Cultural Evening

  • Drive to Dire Dawa and fly to Addis Ababa.
  • In the afternoon, continue with more coffee shop visits.
  • Later in the evening, enjoy an Ethiopian night at one of the cultural restaurants with traditional meals and local dances.
  • Finally, drop off at your hotel or transfer to the airport for your departure home.
