Embark on a 3-day hiking excursion to the small peak of Yanapaccha from Huaraz. Travel through the Callejon de Huaylas and Llanganuco valleys, surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of Huandoy, Pisco, Chopicalqui, Contrahierbas, and many more. On summit day, climb to 5460 m for spectacular views over the Cordillera Blanca, with stunning glacier lakes and valleys below. This adventure in Huascarán National Park combines high-altitude trekking, camping, and rewarding mountain scenery.

The itinerary

Day 01

From Huaraz to Portachuelo de Llanganuco and Moraine Camp

  • Depart from Huaraz at 6:00 am and head north along the Callejon de Huaylas valley until you reach Yungay town. From there, turn east and continue driving up toward the Llanganuco valley, passing beautiful glacier lakes on the way to Portachuelo de Llanganuco, km 42, at 4600 m.

  • Start walking for 3 hours with the support of the porters. They will carry the climbing gear and take it to the Moraine camp at 4900 m near Yanapaccha Lake.

Overnight camp at Moraine camp.

Day 02

Summit Climb to Yanapaccha and Return to Camp

  • After breakfast at 2:00 am, start climbing toward the Yanapaccha summit at 5460 m.

  • Reach the summit and enjoy views of more than 10 other peaks over 6000 m high, including the giant Mount Huascarán at 6768 m.

  • Return to the Moraine camping spot and spend the last night camping at the base camp.

Day 03

Descent from Moraine Camp to Huaraz

  • Collect the climbing gear and walk down to Portachuelo de Llanganuco, where the private transport will be waiting to drive back to Huaraz.

Know before you go

  • Located on the north side of Peru's highest summit, Huascarán, this is a small peak but with considerable climbing difficulty on the west wall, making it ideal for climbing courses. It offers spectacular summit views. It is surrounded by huge snow-capped peaks such as Huandoy, Pisco, Chopicalqui, Contrahierbas, Taulliraju, Chacraraju, and the majestic Huascarán.

  • Maximum altitude: 5460 m (Yanapaccha summit).

  • Difficulty: Moderate - hard.

  • Duration: 3 days / 2 nights.

  • Preferred time: May - September.

  • Average temperature: Between 13° C and 23° C during the day; at night, from -05° C to -02° C.
