The itinerary

1
Day 01

Huaraz to Musho Village and Huascarán Base Camp

  • Depart from Huaraz at 7:00 am.

  • Head towards the north side of Callejon de Huaylas until Mancos at 2500 m.

  • Drive on the dirt road to Musho village. There, meet the donkey driver and donkeys, who will carry the climbing gear to the base camp at 4200 m.

Day 02

Base Camp to Moraine Camp

  • After breakfast at 8:00 am, prepare the climbing gear and start walking up a rocky section toward Moraine Camp at 4850 m.

  • Have lunch.

  • Enjoy an impressive sunset.

Day 03

Moraine Camp to High Camp

  • Continue on a rocky path until the glacier edge.

  • Traverse along the path to reach the high camp at 5350 m.

Day 04

High Camp to Second High Camp via the Col

  • Start climbing up toward the Col.

  • On the way up, pass a somewhat dangerous avalanche site. Trek onward to reach the Col in the middle of a couple of peaks.

  • Enjoy one of the most impressive sunsets in the whole Cordillera Blanca.

Day 05

Summit Day to Huascarán South Summit and Descent to Moraine Camp

  • Have breakfast very early at 12:00 am.

  • Hike up on switchbacks with some steep slope sections.

  • After 7 hours of hiking, reach the south summit at 6768 m. From the summit, enjoy a breathtaking view of the Cordillera Blanca.

  • Head back on the same route, using rappels on the difficult parts to reach the camp.

  • Descend to Moraine Camp and spend the last night there.

Day 06

Moraine Camp to Musho and Return to Huaraz

  • After breakfast at 8:00 am, collect the climbing gear and go back to the base camp. There, the donkey driver will be waiting to load the climbing gear and transport it to Musho village.

  • Take the private transport waiting there and head back to Huaraz.

Know before you go

  • Huascarán is the highest peak in the tropical zone and in the Cordillera Blanca. It is visible from Huaraz and from all sides of Callejon de Huaylas. The approach route is via Musho village, and nowadays the normal climbing route is on the west face. From the camp above 6000 m, the route continues on steep slope sections until reaching the summit, which requires wide climbing experience, good physical condition, and climbing technique. From the summit, it offers gorgeous views of deep valleys, a major part of the Cordillera Blanca, and glacier lakes.

  • Maximum altitude: 6768 m (Huascarán south summit).

  • Difficulty: Difficult.

  • Duration: 6 days / 5 nights.

  • Preferred time: May - September.

  • Average temperature: Between 13° C - 23° C during the day; at night, -05° C to -02° C, and on the top, -10° C.

Important Advice:

  • Do an early booking to get special discounts.

  • For booking validation, deposit 40% of the total price and pay the remaining 60% upon arrival in Peru or Huaraz.
