The itinerary

Day 01

From Huaraz to Cuartelhuain Camp

  • Depart from Huaraz at 7:00 am and travel south through the Callejon de Huaylas on the paved road to Chiquian. Continue via the Chiquian province area, Llamac, and Cocpa village until reaching Cuartelhuain campsite at 4200 m.

Overnight camp at Cuartelhuain.

Day 02

Trek over Cacananpunta Pass to Mitucocha

  • Trek toward Cacananpunta Pass at 4700 m. Once you reach it, stand on the continental divide and enjoy amazing photo opportunities over deep valleys, hills, and snow-capped peaks.

  • Descend toward the next camp, with an amazing view of Mount Jirishanca and Mount Ninashanca in the background.

Overnight camp at Mitucocha.

Day 03

Carhuac Pass and Lake Carhuacocha

  • Walk on easy terrain until Punta Carhuac Pass at 4650 m. From this pass, witness a breathtaking view of the highest peaks of Huayhuash, such as Yerupaja (6617 m), the famous Siula Grande (6344 m), and Jirishanca.

  • Hike down to Lake Carhuacocha, a genuinely gorgeous lake and scenic campsite with an astonishing mountain view in the background.

Day 04

Siula Pass to Huayhuash Camp

  • Enjoy the spectacular sunrise and the lake water reflecting the mountains. Start walking up toward Siula Pass and take in the fabulous, breathtaking view over three glacier lakes, including Siula and Quesillococha.

  • Walk down to the Huayhuash camping spot at 4330 m.

Day 05

Portachuelo Pass and Viconga Hot Springs

  • Start walking up toward the spectacular Portachuelo de Huayhuash Pass. See Mount Puscanturpa and Mount Trapecio on the way, enjoy the view of the Cordillera Raura from the pass, and then descend toward the largest Lake Viconga until reaching Viconga campsite.

  • In the afternoon, enjoy showering and swimming in the hot spring close to the campsite.

Day 06

Cuyoc Pass and San Antonio Viewpoint

  • Hike to the second-highest pass on the trek. After a few days of trekking above 4000 m, tourists become acclimatized to cross Punta Cuyoc Pass.

  • From the pass, enjoy some of the most impressive mountain views, then continue descending along a steep section to the flat grassy valley below.

  • Climb to the San Antonio viewpoint at 5020 m and enjoy a splendid view of summits, glacier lakes, and deep valleys.

  • Return along the same path to Elefante and Huanacpatay campsite at 4200 m.

Day 07

Through Huanacpatay Valley to Huatiac

  • After breakfast, walk down along Huanacpatay Valley to the isolated hamlet of Huayllapa.

  • From this village, continue along a long, narrow valley until reaching the grassy valley of Huatiac, your camping spot.

Overnight camp at Huactiac.

Trek time: 7 hours (walk up/walk down)

Day 08

Tapush Pass to Rinconada Camp

  • Trek up from Huatiac toward Tapush Pass.

  • On the way, enjoy mountain views of Mount Diablo Mudo, Lake Susucocha, and more.

  • After that, descend to the campsite, which lies close to the Quenual forest.

Day 09

Yaucha Pass and Jahuacocha Views

  • Start walking up toward Punta Yaucha Pass.

  • From the pass, enjoy spectacular mountain views, including the majestic Mount Yerupaja and, if you are lucky, condors.

  • Continue walking down while enjoying the spectacular views of Lake Jahuacocha and Mount Jirishanca until reaching Jahuacocha campsite.

Day 10

Pampa Llamac Pass and Return to Huaraz

  • Hike toward Pampa Llamac Pass at 4300 m after completing the Andean circuit. Rest there and take some pictures.

  • Descend along the sloping trail to Llamac Village, where private transportation will take you back to Huaraz.

Time: 5 hours (walk up/walk down) and driving time: 4 hours
