8-Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Climb with Hut Accommodation

8 Days Round trip from Kilimanjaro Airport Rd Hard pace

The journey

Trip highlights
  • 01 Climb Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route, also known as the Coca-Cola route
  • 02 Sleep in mountain huts at every campsite, with solar lights and comfortable beds
  • 03 Improve your summit chances with an acclimatization day at Horombo
  • 04 Reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa
  • 05 Experience Kilimanjaro's biodiversity from rainforest to alpine desert

The Marangu route, also known as the Coca-Cola route, is the least expensive way to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers sleeping huts at every campsite, with solar lights and comfortable beds. While this route is often completed in 5 days, this 8-day program includes extra time for acclimatization, improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. Along the way, enjoy Kilimanjaro's changing landscapes, from rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and the summit of Africa's highest mountain.

Very early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s Point, located on the crater rim.

Day 02

Hotel to Mandara Hut

After breakfast and briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (about 1 hour), register and commence the climb. Walk through the rainforest to the Mandara encampment. A side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings, including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. Look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colobus monkeys in the rainforest.

Know before you go

  • The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established. It may be considered the 'easiest' by many, but this is not reflected in the summit success rate - it is the lowest of all routes. Taking it slowly on this route with a 6-day itinerary raises the success rate to 60%, while the 5-day trek has a success rate of 27%.
  • The huts are communal, and the bunks have a sponge mattress and pillow. There are 60 beds at Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 beds at Horombo Hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. Men's and ladies' restrooms are available at the last camp, but they are basic.
  • All climbing groups, often from several countries worldwide, share meals in dining huts, providing a jovial and energetic atmosphere.
