This day trip covers 40 kilometres from Musanze (Ruhengeri) Town along different riding paths. The first 4 kilometres are uphill on tarmac toward the villages, followed by a village ride through different plantations with volcanic views and Twin Lakes views before descending to the lakes. The route combines scenic countryside cycling with time at Lakes Burera and Ruhondo near the Ugandan border.

The Virunga Volcanic Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, which are bordered by high hills and enormous waterfalls.

Day 01

Twin Lakes Village Biking Adventure

• 9.00 am - 12.00 pm: This day cycling tour starts from Musanze town at our main office or from where clients are accommodated. The beautiful Twin Lakes can be found near the Ugandan border, not far from the foot of Mount Muhabura.
• Lake Burera is a tributary of Lake Ruhondo. The combined surface area of Lakes Ruhondo and Burera is 2800 hectares. They are typical lava-dammed lakes in East Africa and have interesting backstories. The greenery surrounding the lakes gives the water an ethereal hue, making it appear green.
• 12.00 pm - 12.30 pm: Take a boat ride to the Ruhondo peninsula for lunch. The Virunga Volcanic Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, which are bordered by high hills and enormous waterfalls. A narrow strip of land, precisely 1 kilometre wide, separates Burera and Ruhondo.
• 14.00 pm - 14.30 pm: Head back by boat and ride back to the hotel in Musanze town, where the tour started.
