Walk across the George Washington Bridge, the most heavily trafficked bridge in the world, and learn about its construction, both before the 1930s and today. Leave the rushing traffic behind as you enter the peaceful rustle of leaves and trees - and perhaps spot some animals - in the Palisades Interstate Park. This full-day experience combines urban history, nature trails, and storytelling before returning by bus to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.

George Washington Bridge Walk and Palisades Trails

  • Walk across the bridge and onto the Palisades, following multiple trails to reach about 5 miles north with your American tour guide.

  • Cross under the Parkway and over another road to enter the woods again for a walk through a historic nature preserve.

  • Walk down through a suburban community where the right for women to vote was forged and tested.

  • See and explore to understand the nature of a historic district, and get refreshed at dinner.

  • Return to New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.

What's Included

  • The services of a knowledgeable local tour guide, who is also a former resident of that part of New Jersey and has many personal stories to supplement the historical narrative he will relate.

  • Wine or beer with lunch.

What's Not Included

  • Please bring water and snacks. There will be opportunities to refill bottles, but none to purchase snacks beyond the one opportunity a mile in on the Palisades trail.

  • Return bus fare is extra and should be about $6.50.

  • Lunch is extra, although wine or beer is included in your ticket.

Know before you go

  • This is a full-day walk, beginning in Washington Heights at the corner of W. 178th St. and Fort Washington Avenue, at the southwest corner of the GWB Port Authority Bus Terminal.

  • We will end for lunch or an early dinner for real refreshment, and then board a bus for the ride back to the Port Authority Terminal at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue.
