The itinerary

Day 01

Drive to Lake Natron and Evening Flamingo Viewing

Depart Moshi or Arusha at 7:00 a.m. and drive to Ngaresero village at Lake Natron with a packed lunch, enjoying en-route game viewing along the way. In the evening, explore Lake Natron for its flamingoes and other species. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at Kamakia Camp or Lake Natron Tented Camp.

Day 02

Ol'doinyo Lengai Sunrise Climb

In the very early morning, drive to the base of Ol'doinyo Lengai to begin the climb. Reach the summit at sunrise and spend some time there before descending to the base of the mountain. You will then be transferred by jeep to Kamakia Camp for a shower and rest. Dinner and overnight will be at Kamakia Camp or Lake Natron Tented Camp.

Day 03

Return to Arusha or Moshi

After breakfast, drive back to Arusha or Moshi.

Know before you go

• Ol Doinyo Lengai is the only active volcano known to emit natrocarbonatites, a rare type of volcanic rock that is rich in sodium, potassium, and calcium carbonate but low in silica. Lava with less silica has a lower viscosity, leading Ol Doinyo Lengai to have some of the fastest-flowing lava in the world.
