Day 04

Gorilla Tracking and Batwa Cultural Visit

  • This will be an eventful day, and you need to wake up at around 6 a.m. As you have breakfast, request the hotel to prepare your packed lunch just in case the activity goes past mid-day. The driver will take you to the park offices for registration, where you will join other trackers for a briefing at 7:45 a.m. about the dos and don'ts during gorilla tracking.
  • The park guides will offer you a hiking stick, and you will also have a chance to hire porters to help with any heavy luggage or cameras. You will trek through thick creepers and undergrowth with your guides to find the gorillas, which can take anywhere from half an hour to three-quarters of the day.
  • The steeply forested landscape is incredibly dense but crisscrossed by numerous animal trails, allowing access to tourists. Once you reach the gorillas, you will be given only one hour of observation. Use this time to study the group and individual members. Do not forget to take some videos and photos, or else no one will know that you ever took part in such a fascinating activity.
  • After spending time with the primates, you will be led back to the starting point to receive your certificate of participation. You will find our office guide waiting to take you back to the hotel for lunch and rest.
  • If time allows, late in the afternoon you will be taken to visit the Batwa pygmies of Bwindi. The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forests in Bwindi, Mgahinga, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga in Congo. Most were forced out of the forests without compensation or proper adjustment to modern life. The nature walk will allow you to learn about their ancient ways of life and their struggles to adapt to modern life outside the forest.
