Day 02

Gorilla Trekking, Batwa Trail and Lake Bunyonyi

  • This will be an eventful day, and you must wake up at around 6:00 am. As you have breakfast, request the hotel to prepare your packed lunch just in case the trekking activity continues past mid-day. The driver will take you to the park offices so that you arrive in time for the briefing from the park ranger guide, which starts at 7:30 am.
  • The briefing covers everything you must know about gorilla trekking, including the gorilla groups in the sector, the history of the forest, and what to expect. After the briefing, you will be assigned a gorilla family and 7 other travellers. The park guides will offer you a hiking stick and a chance to hire porters to help with any heavy luggage or cameras.
  • After everyone is assembled, you will begin tracking the primates. Gorilla trekking can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 6 hours, depending on the gorilla family you are tracking and their location on the day of the trek. Once you reach them, you are allowed only one hour of observation. Use this time to study the group and its individual members.
  • Do not forget to take some videos and photos, or else no one will know that you ever took part in such a fascinating activity. Please note that mountain gorillas are wild animals, and as such, sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, viewing success rates are over 90%.
  • After spending time with the primates, you will be led back to the starting point to receive your certificate of participation. You will find our office guide waiting to take you back to the hotel for lunch and rest.
  • Late in the afternoon, you will be taken to visit the Batwa pygmies of Bwindi. The Batwa were the original inhabitants of the forests in Bwindi, Mgahinga, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga in Congo. Most were forced out of the forests without compensation or proper adjustment to modern life.
  • The nature walk will allow you to learn about their ancient ways of life and the struggles of adapting to modern life outside the forest.
  • After the Batwa trail, you will proceed to Lake Bunyonyi for relaxation. Lake Bunyonyi is framed by lush green terraced hills that reach a height of 2,200-2,478 m. But it is the 29 islands of various shapes and sizes scattered across the water that make it most magical, and you could admire them all day.
