Day 01

Arrival and Luang Prabang City Exploration

Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the hotel. This afternoon, explore Luang Prabang. Situated at the confluence of the Mekong and Khan rivers, this is the most beautiful city in Laos. Explore the French colonial architecture, where the buildings are well preserved and the medieval ambience remains intact. Visit Wat Xiengthong, an outstanding example of architecture in Laos. Afterwards, climb to the top of Mt. Phousi, which offers a spectacular sunset and panoramic views over Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 02

Morning Rituals and Mekong Cruise to Pak Ou Cave

Today, you may want to wake up early and join the locals in the morning ritual of offering alms to the monks on their morning walk. Return to the hotel for breakfast before visiting Wat Visoun. Afterwards, transfer to a traditional long boat for a trip up the Mekong River to explore the famous Pak Ou cave. The upper section of the cave is part of a limestone cave filled with Buddha images of all styles and sizes. Stop by Ban Xang Khong, the well-known village for its wood papers and silk weavings with natural dyes. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

Day 03

Kuangsi Waterfalls, Villages, and Royal Heritage

This morning, make an excursion to the lovely Kuangsi Waterfalls. Stop by Ban Xom, a traditional Lao Loum village, and Ban Na Ouan, a small village of the hill-tribe group Hmong, probably the best-known minority group in Laos. In the afternoon, tour the former Royal Palace and the National Museum before spending the rest of the day roaming the streets and soaking in the charm of this lovely city. Overnight in Luang Prabang.

What to bring

Passport with a minimum of 6 months' validity remaining - very important.
A good-quality backpack.
Good travel insurance (most policies cover Laos, but check).
A second photo ID other than your passport.
Driver's license if you wish to go on the road or rent a bike or a car.

Prescriptions for any medication you require. Most Lao chemists will sell medicine without a script, but if you are searched by immigration, it is good to be able to show that you need the medicine you carry.
Credit cards - not all in the same bag, and not all of them in your day-to-day wallet.
A light sleeping bag or blanket for cleanliness if you stay at backpacker places; otherwise, mainly for trips from October to February.
Sun protection, a hat, mosquito spray, and enough sunscreen.
A small towel and swimsuit, maybe a light outdoor towel - the waterfalls are inviting.
Good walking shoes, trekking sandals, and flip-flops.
A first aid kit for outdoor activities if you plan such activities.
Earplugs for sleeping and boat trips.
A padlock to prevent unwanted searching of your bags.
An easy-to-wash set of long and short clothes for outdoor use, plus string or hooks.
Rain protection, as tours are held rain or shine, especially from June to October.
Basic toiletries and toilet paper, although these can easily be purchased at local stores and supermarkets.
Games and a good book for the bus or a quiet night.
A small knife, binoculars, a head torch or flashlight, and extra batteries.
Chargers and power banks, as some villages have no power.
Candles and lighters make sense, but not in hand luggage.
A hygiene kit with soap, tissues, toothbrush, tampons, etc.
School supplies, pens, notebooks, toothbrushes, and toothpaste to donate to local villages with your guide. These can be bought in Luang Prabang, and your guide will give them to the school or village.
A small donation to your guide goes a long way toward supporting their family and community.
