Description

Traverse scenic landscapes on an 8-9 hour drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where you will stay at Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge. On Day 2, trek through the forest with expert guides to meet Mountain Gorillas, spending an hour with them and gaining insights into their conservation. Conclude your journey with a leisurely drive back to Kampala/Entebbe, making stops at the Equator crossing and Mpambire Royal drum makers to immerse in local culture.

Itinerary

Day 1: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
- Today, you will meet your driver/guide at the hotel in Kampala or Entebbe and start your drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. You will only have one stop for lunch and then continue driving to the lodge; you will enjoy dinner and overnight.

Drive time: approximately 8-9 hours
Day 2 - Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi forest
- After early breakfast, you will meet your guide, drive to the park headquarters, and meet other trackers for a briefing about the dos and don’ts when you meet the Gorillas in the forest. Meet your game ranger of the day and start the hike, which might take 30 minutes to three-quarters of the day; this depends on where the Mountains Gorillas are that morning.
- Once you meet our close relatives, mountain gorillas, you will stay with them for one hour as you enjoy eye contact and taking photo shots. You will listen to an informative talk from the ranger guide.
- After your Gorilla experience, you will return to the Park offices for a debrief and a certificate at the end of your Gorilla Tracking adventure.
Day 3 - Drive back to Entebbe or Kampala to end the tour
- Today after a lazy breakfast, you will start your scenic drive back to Entebbe and have enough time to make en-route stops along the way. You will stop at the Equator crossing again, and here you will have a chance to take photos. You will continue to Mpambire Royal drum makers, and you will explore how the drums are made and how these people survive in their day-to-day lives. Proceed to Entebbe.

What To Bring

Waterproof hiking boots

Hiking boots are a must for Mountain Gorilla hikes in Uganda, Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo. You will need lightweight hiking boots for this lifetime adventure. Your hiking boots should be able to support your ankle while you hike through the strenuous terrains. Avoid heavy boots, as they will make your hike very challenging.

Gloves

Gardening gloves are helpful as they protect your hands in case you fall and need to catch any support from the different tree species, shrubs sometimes with thorns which can harm the human body. A pair of gloves is necessary as they will safeguard you from the spread of germs.

Rain jackets

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks are tropical rain forests, and the weather here is unpredictable; this means that visitors have to be well prepared with their rain jackets or shawls to help protect them from rainfall since the weather here changes at any time. Even during the dry season, expect rains at any time of the day due to the tropical rainforests.

Long-sleeved shirts, blouses, T-shirts and trousers

Long-sleeved shirts are handy in case of any falling tree branches or ants, stinging insects and vines. Pack long-sleeved shirts and pants with long stockings among the first items on the list.

Bottled water and snacks

Mountain Gorilla Trekking is strenuous, and it takes between 30 minutes to three-quarters of the day while hiking to look for the Gorillas, the impressive creatures. This calls for physical fitness in visitors, requiring you to have not less than two litres of drinking water and energy-giving snacks to boost energy and enable you to finish your trek. Great Adventures Uganda provides all our clients with drinking water and a packed lunch, always prepared at the lodge where you are booked for accommodation.

Camera and additional batteries

The most exciting moment of Gorilla Tracking is when you get a family of Mountain Gorillas relaxing and set your camera to take their pictures. It is a memorable experience; you need a good camera without a flashlight. And don’t leave extra batteries behind since you may need them in the forest. It would be best if you were equipped to avoid any inconveniences that may come as a result of a low battery in a camera.

Hat and sunscreen or sunglasses

In case of sun rays, you will need to safeguard your eyes from scorching sun rays, so you need a hat and sunglasses. However much you are in the middle of the forest with tall trees, sometimes you walk in the open while searching for the Mountain Gorillas.

Binoculars

When you are in the jungle, you do not only look out for the Mountain Gorillas but also a variety of different bird species available to catch a glimpse of other primates. The National Park offers refuge to over 350 bird species for any bird lover to see while on your Mountain Gorilla tracking experience.

Insect repellants

The forest is a habitat to many kinds of insects that are harmful to human beings, including black aunties and many others, so the repellant will help you move without disturbances from the insects that would be harmful to your skin and some visitors, especially the females have a phobia to the insects, so this could be a good way of keeping the insects away from them.

Long stocking or Getters

Long stockings or Getters are always required on your Gorilla trekking. This is because you must wear your long pants while walking in the forest. Sometimes, you can walk on the safari ants in the forest, which helps that they don’t go straight to your body.

Porters

Porters are always optional, but there are some incidents when you need them. According to our experience, we always advise our clients to utilize the porters for the good of their Gorilla trekking. As discussed earlier, Gorilla trekking can be hectic; this requires you to have someone to offer you a push or a pull on your way to the Gorillas. Porters charge some money, but it’s worth the services they render since they are still school-going students; they mostly do this during their holidays, weekends and even vacations or when chased from school to look for fees. Through doing this, they are helped to solicit money for their school fees.
