3-Day Selous Safari from Dar es Salaam with Rufiji River Boat Safari

Our driver-guide will pick you up from Dar es Salaam and drive you to Selous Game Reserve, with a picnic lunch served on the way. We arrive at the camp early in the afternoon, settle in, and head for a boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River.

The confluence of the Kilombero and Luwegu Rivers forms this river. It is approximately 600 kilometres (370 mi) long, and you will see plentiful hippos and crocodiles here. The Rufiji River, which flows through the reserve, also attracts big herds of Tanzanian elephants. Some 350 bird species can also be found in the Selous Game Reserve.

After breakfast, we depart for morning and afternoon game drives in the Selous Game Reserve. The Selous Game Reserve is the largest in Africa, covering 54,600 square kilometres.

The reserve gets its name from the hunter and explorer Frederick Courtney Selous, who was killed here during World War I. Selous is famous for elephants. Other species commonly seen are lions, wild dogs, buffaloes, bushbuck, impalas, elands, baboons, zebras, and greater kudus. It was originally set aside as a hunting area, where animals are abundant but shyer than in the Northern Parks.

After breakfast, we drive back to Dar es Salaam, with a picnic lunch on the way.
